What’s in the name? Turns out a lot and that is why before putting an official stamp of renaming Azamgarh to Aryamgarh, Yogi Adityanath took on the spirit behind the word ‘Azamgarh’ and has derailed its whole meaning, paving the way for renaming the city in letter and spirit.
Yogi launches scathing attack on the patronizing attitude of SP:
On Monday, 6th December 2021, the respected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh launched a scathing attack on previous governments in the state for stalling developmental projects and promoting criminalisation. Shri Yogi Adityanath was in Azamgarh to inaugurate various developmental projects.
Addressing a public meeting in Lalganj Tehsil, the firebrand chief minister said, “Azamgarh had become a fortress of terror under the Samajwadi Party (SP) rule. An identity crisis had emerged before youths here.” The chief minister especially blamed the patronization of criminals under the administration of Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh Yadav as the main reason behind the decline of youth, especially in Azamgarh.
Chief Minister was not looking to diminish his achievement out of forced humbleness. He unequivocally stated that Azamgarh was colloquially known as Atankgarh due to the promotion of terrorist activities by the SP government. Apprising people of his government’s steps in curbing the criminal activities in the district, Shri Yogi said, “After coming to power, our government worked to change its image, We cracked down on mafia and their illegally earned properties are being bulldozed. It is strange that the bulldozing of properties of mafia is hurting SP and Congress,”
Informing people of the state that youth of Azamgarh were not respected when they went outside, Shri Yogi said, “Azamgarh was the worst sufferer of the SP’s tradition of patronizing criminals, people of the district were denied accommodation in hotels and dharmshalas in the country due to the tag.”
CM also paid his tributes to Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar:
Chief Minister also paid his tribute to Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar on his death anniversary. He did not mince his words while claiming that parties like SP had defeated the purpose and intention of constitutional makers. Stressing on the fact that anarchy and SP rule had become synonymous, he said, “Jiss gaadi me SaPa ka jhanda, samjho hoga koi jana pehchana gunda. (Whichever vehicle had an SP flag, it was understood that the occupant was a criminal).”
CM has also announced his motive of changing Azamgarh’s name to Aryamgarh:
About a month ago, on the occasion of laying of foundation stone Maharaja Suheldev University, Yogi Adityanath had said that if everything goes well, then no one can stop Azamgarh from becoming Aryamgarh. Yogi Adityanath then addressed the gathering, saying, “There will be a new state university named after Maharaja Suheldev, which will end Azamgarh’s identity crisis”.

Summarizing the history of Azamgarh, Yogi Adityanath had said, “Earlier there was a crisis of identity, people used to fill the family in the name of caste when jobs were created, they used to go out on recovery to get money, but today we have given jobs to 7.50 lakh youth. This job is not in my share but in the part of the youth. It is a pleasure if someone gets a government job.” He also said that Azamgarh’s MPs did not come to visit during the Corona period. Commenting on the opportunism of opposition, he had said that various politicians will visit the area during election time, but Azamgarh has been and will be the key centre of his focus.
When Yogi Adityanath changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj, everyone ridiculed him, and many people protested. But his goal was clear – no compromise with culture, and Yogi Adityanath proved his commitment to the level to which he could go for cultural upliftment. People are just waiting for the formal announcement of changing the name of Azamgarh.
