Following the derogatory references to the Assamese community on the backdrop of the eviction drive against the illegal migrants in Assam’s Darrang, FIR has been lodged against ‘The Hindu’ editor along with two others.

‘The entire Assamese community is hateful and bigoted’

A few weeks back, a violent clash broke out, when a team of police officials went to the Gorukhuti area of Darrang in Assam to evict illegal encroachers from a land belonging to a state farming project. Thereafter, ‘The Hindu’, flag bearer of the left media, jumped into the bandwagon to instigate enmity amongst different groups to disturb public tranquilities.

The portal published an article titled ‘The Scorching Rays of Assamese Nationalism’ that depicted the unfortunate death of a protestor (Moynul Haque) as an act of political sadism. The article further tried to suggest that the Assamese people do not bear true faith to the rule of law established by the Constitution and thus the entire community is hateful and bigoted.

According to The Organiser’s report, the article deliberately promoted ‘disharmony, feelings of enmity, hatred, and ill-will towards the Assamese community amongst the other groups and communities of the country.

However, as of now, the article has been edited by the portal after receiving flak from netizens.

FIR against ‘The Hindu’ editor

Soon after the article got published, a first information report (FIR) has been lodged by Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM) against Suraj Gogoi, a Singapore-based Assamese researcher along with two others named Angshuman Chowdhury, associated with the New Delhi-based Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies and Suresh Nambath, editor of ‘The Hindu’.

PVM, in its FIR, has claimed that the article published in ‘The Hindu’ written by Gogoi was “with instances of offensive speech being made against Assam and the larger Assamese community.”

Illegal immigrants attacked Assam Police

As per the TFI reports, an unruly mob of illegal immigrants approached, intimidated, and attacked the police with lathis and bricks. 100s of them gathered in fields and began throwing sticks, stones, and bricks at the police. The cops were helpless; the only way to stop the mob’s incoming attacks was using their hand-held shields.

4,500 bighas of land were occupied by around 800 families in Assam’s Darrang district. The land was eventually cleared as part of the Himanta government’s drive against “illegal encroachments”. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also claimed that four religious structures and one private institution were demolished in the process.
