How does it matter if the accused is a Salim or a Pujari – the horrible communalisation of Delhi Cantt Rape

Rape, accused

A painfully horrifying incident has happened in Delhi Cantt. According to reports, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by four people named Radhe Shyam, Laxmi Narayan, Kuldeep and Salim. The girl, belonging to a Dalit community, had gone to a crematorium near her house to fetch some cold water for her family. Here, the family alleged that she was sexually molested by the four accused. After the heinous act, accused Radhe Shyam went to the girl’s house and called out for her mother. The accused told the victim’s mother that her daughter was electrocuted while fetching water and succumbed soon after.

According to The Print, on reaching the crematorium, the mother found the child’s lifeless body on the ground. Her lips had turned blue, there were burn marks on her wrists and elbow, and there was blood coming from her nose, the mother recounted. According to her, before she realised what was happening, the priest told her, “Your daughter got electrocuted while filling water, hurry up the cremation or the cops will conduct a post mortem and doctors will steal her organs.”

Ten minutes after she reached the spot, the four accused persons began the cremation in a hurry – as though their lives depended on it. As the pyre burned, she called her husband, while her wails drew about 200 villagers to the spot. The villagers extinguished the pyre, from which only the girl’s legs could be saved. The biggest challenge before the police now is to determine sexual assault, considering that the victim’s body was cremated before family members could intervene.

According to India Today, following the arrest of the four accused, police inspected the scene of the crime with assistance from a team of CBI’s Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). Delhi Police will collect blood samples of the four accused and seek police remand of the accused to conduct a DNA test, polygraph test and narco-analysis. The accused have been charged under sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 204 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) apart from the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the SC/ST Act.

What has followed this horrific incident is a blatant communalisation effort by liberals and leftists, while the mandatory high-profile political visits in cases like these are also being seen. Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Bhim ‘Army’ chief Chandrasekhar Azad and others have formed a beeline outside the victim’s house – aiming to politicise and communalise the crime.

The same people who accuse Hindus and ‘right wing’ activists of communalising incidents in which the accused rapists happen to be Muslims are today claiming that the rape (which is yet to be medically established) of the minor girl was carried out by a ‘Hindu’, upper caste, ‘Brahmin’ priest. That the accused also includes a ‘Salim’ is being completely ignored by the inhuman coterie of communal bigots, who seek to portray Hindus in bad light at the very first opportunity they get.

The communalisation of the Delhi Cantt alleged rape case must be stopped immediately, and the furtherance of casteist politics in the name of ensuring justice for the victim must also be ended. Else, when members of the minority community are involved in such heinous crimes, liberals and Islamists will be in no position to stop right wing activists from highlighting the religion of the accused.
