In Bengal’s Debra constituency that is poll-bound on April 1, two IPS officers are locked in a faceoff against each other. Both were once quite close to CM Mamata Bannerjee, but while IPS Humayun Kabir has still not changed his loyalty, Bharati Ghosh has chosen a different path.

Trinamool’s IPS Humayun Kabir, the IPS officer known for arresting three BJP workers over the controversial “Goli Maaro…” slogans at a rally, had resigned a couple of months ago. He claims to have a clear edge over Ms Bharati Ghosh, who had joined BJP in 2019 after falling out with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her police service in the West Midnapore-Jhargram area.

To quote IPS Humayun Kabir, “I am a native of this land. I was born and brought up here in Marhtala, and I know this place like the back of my palm; you cannot compare me with Bharati. I was a very senior IPS officer, and my record speaks for me. I do not think this is a battle between us.”

When he joined Trinamool months after quitting the police service, IPS Humayun Kabir had mentioned,

“Mamata Banerjee has brought development to Bengal. I have worked under her and I have seen her standby people. I have been inspired by her. A party from outside is trying to win here by spreading division,” he had said on the day he joined the Trinamool.

During the election campaign, when he was asked whether his electoral debut on the Trinamool ticket was linked to his action against the BJP workers, he replied in the negative. Mr Kabir has promised that he will resolve Debra’s water scarcity problem. He has also promised to ramp up the area’s civic infrastructure.

A few months after the resignation of a senior IPS from West Bengal, he joined the ruling party TMC in the state. Former Chandannagar Police Commissioner Humayun Kabir on Tuesday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal led by Mamata Banerjee.

Kabir had resigned from his post last month, barely three months before his retirement, citing some ‘personal’ reasons. He has been replaced by Gaurav Sharma, who was Joint Commissioner (Estt.) in Kolkata Police.

The 2003-batch IPS officer joined the party in the presence of Trinamool supremo Banerjee during a political rally in East Burdwan. Earlier, Kabir’s wife Anindita Das Kabir had joined the ruling formation in Bengal.

Kabir’s role as Chandannagar Police Commissioner came into limelight last week when he arrested three BJP workers. According to sources, these workers had allegedly raised ‘goli maro’ slogans at a rally on January 20. The slogans were raised at a roadshow led by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who left the Trinamool Congress in December last year and joined the BJP.

Many new ministers including former IPS Humayun Kabir in TMC Govt.

Bankim Hazra, Rathin Ghosh, Pulak Roy, Biplav Mitra, IPS Humayun Kabir, Akhil Giri, Ratna De Nag, Beerwah Hansda, Jyotsna Mandi, Manoj Tiwari, Siuli Saha, Bulchiki Baraik, Dilip Mandal, Akruzzaman, Shrikant Mahato and Paresh Adhikari have been included in the cabinet for the first time. Former Chandannagar Police Commissioner (CP) Humayun Kabir had resigned three months before his retirement citing personal reasons in January this year. Kabir, a 2003-batch IPS officer, later joined the TMC on February 9 during an event in the presence of Mamata Banerjee.

BJP’s candidate Bharti Ghosh was defeated by Kabir

In the assembly elections by TMC who made her a candidate from Debra assembly constituency. BJP had fielded Bharti Ghosh, a former IPS officer and vice-president of Bengal BJP, from Debra. The seat became very popular due to a contest between two former IPS officers, but IPS Humayun Kabir defeated Bharti Ghosh by 11,226 votes. [Updated]
