After TMC MP Saugata Roy floated the idea of Bihar-esque Mahagathbandhan which comprises of TMC-Left-INC to take on the BJP in West Bengal which would have been nothing short of a dream team for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury mocked Roy’s proposal for an alliance as he instead asked the Trinamool Congress to merge with the Indian National Congress.
For the uninitiated, Mamata Banerjee in the past was a senior leader of the INC but later decided to break away and form the Trinamool Congress and gradually emerged as the sole challenger to the decade’s old Left rule in West Bengal. Mamata vowed to break the Left rule with the Nandigram agitation being a watershed moment in her political career as she finally prevailed in 2011 as TMC stormed to power in West Bengal.
However, things have gotten desperate for the TMC as it stares at an imminent defeat at the hands of the BJP, and hence has sought help from two of its fiercest political rivals and ideologically opposite – INC and Left, only to be rejected by them.

“We are not interested in aligning with the TMC. Why is the TMC now interested in an alliance with us after poaching our MLAs over the last 10 years. If Mamata Banerjee is in keen on fighting the BJP, then she should join the Congress as it is the only pan-India platform to fight against communalism,” said Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
It is well known in the Bengal political circles that Chowdhury has nothing but contempt for Mamata Banerjee and the fact that not only he rejected Roy’s proposal for an alliance but also mocked Mamata by asking the TMC to merge with INC.
Such is the poor state of the TMC that even a heavily depleted and beleaguered Left rejected the idea of an alliance with the TMC.
“This only reflects that we are still a force to reckon with. The Left and Congress will defeat both the TMC and the BJP in the assembly elections,” said Senior CPM leader Sujan Chakraborty.
Earlier TMC MP Saugata Roy had stated that “If the Left Front and the Congress are genuine anti-BJP forces, they should line up behind Trinamool Congress, because Mamata Banerjee’s party is the only party fighting against the communal and divisive politics of the saffron party. Mamata Banerjee is the real face of secularism.”
