At a time when the entire nation is eagerly waiting for justice in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, Senior Advocate Indira Jaising has kicked off a major controversy by asking Nirbhaya’s mother to forgive the death row convicts. Jaising tweeted, “While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against the death penalty.”

Jaising’s outrageous remarks obviously did not go down well with Nirbhaya’s parents. Slamming the Senior Advocate, Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi said, “Can’t believe how Indira Jaising even dared to suggest such this. I met her many times over the years in Supreme Court, not once did she ask for my well being and today she is speaking for convicts. Such people make a living by supporting rapists, hence rape incidents don’t stop.” She added, “Who is Indira Jaising to give me such a suggestion? Whole country wants the convicts to be executed. Just because of people like her, justice is not done with rape victims.”
Nirbhaya’s father, Badrinath Singh, also condemned Jaising over her remarks encouraging his wife to forgive the death row convicts. He echoed the comments made by his wife, Asha Devi and also said that rapes were on increase because of people like Indira Jaising. He also expressed shock and dismay at how she couldn’t understand the pain of another woman.
It is absolutely preposterous how the so-called human rights activists and self-acclaimed intellectuals have made this outrageous demand to forgive the death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. Nirbhaya’s mother has been waiting for justice for the last seven-year. But she is still being deprived. Now, she is being made to feel guilty for seeking the death penalty for the men who had brutalised her daughter.
The ghastly nature of the crime had shaken the conscience of the nation. In fact, one still feels shaken by the incident. Just imagine the plight of the parents, who better than all remember the details, graphic details of the case. And they have to live every day with the dreadful memory of what transpired with their daughter.
It is nothing but sheer torture to put Nirbhaya’s family through this inane campaign to save the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder convicts. The apex court has served Nirbhaya’s a near-just verdict, which can give them some sense of closure though they will always continue to live with the dreadful memory. However, there are still being taken for a ride by these illogical romanticists.
It is a very romantic idea to get the death penalty abolished, however if it takes more than seven years to put the death row convicts in such a high profile case to justice, then we are clearly not there yet. The entire nation had erupted in anger after the Nirbhaya case, if this case took seven years, just imagine the level of delay in cases that do come into spotlight. We are a justice starved society and illogical romanticism is only bound to make matters worse.
