As the singer Adnan Sami bags a Padma Shri award, the coterie of intellectuals, liberals alongside their political patrons are targeting the singer for his Pakistani origin. These are the same people who have enthusiastically defended the Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz when his poetry was recited in an anti- CAA protest.
As the tradition, the government has announced the list of Padma awardees a day before the Republic Day. Adnan Sami was also included in the list, bagging Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of Arts. To the surprise of the people, the Congress and the leftist cabal, who are the self-acclaimed voice of writers and artists, were furious over this.
Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill said ‘it is magic of govt chamchagiri’ while senior leader Digvijay Singh exploited this opportunity to forward his anti-CAA rhetoric, “I was criticised for recommending citizenship to Adnan Sami. I am happy that he has got citizenship and Padma Shri. If the government can grant citizenship to a Pakistani Muslim, then what is the need to bring CAA? It has been implemented to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims.”

Even the Raj Thackeray led MNS opposed this citing that Adnan was not an original citizen, in a tweet, Ameya Khopkar, president of the MNS’s cinema wing, said, “Sami is not an original Indian citizen. MNS is of the view that he should not be given any award. We condemn the decision to honour him with Padma Shri and demand the decision be withdrawn.”

However, the artiste expressed gratitude towards India and the government, saying, “The greatest moment for any Artiste is to be appreciated & recognised by his/her government. I am overwhelmed with infinite gratitude for being honoured with the ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India. It has been a 34 years musical journey.. ‘Bohot Shukriya’!”

Notably, Adnan was born in London and has been living in India since 2001, his mother was Indian while his father was a Pakistani diplomat. He traces his roots back to Kashmir valley. It must be mentioned here that though the Modi government has given citizenship to Adnan, it was the Congress government which extended his visa afterwards in order to ensure his stay in India. Today’s stance of Congress and its leaders is nothing but a clear show of hypocrisy.
The left liberal cabal must appreciate the artist for his contribution to arts rather than questioning him for his origins as it will hurt their own image. Adnan’s gratitude shows respect for the country as well as the government, labelling him as ‘chamcha’ would be a disgrace to our culture.
