It seems that in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the grand old party led by Rahul Gandhi has given up on all moral principles with the sole object of somehow coming back into power. In what clearly shows that Congress has admitted to CPI(M)-sponsored hooliganism in the state of Kerala, the party president said, “I visited the families of 2 innocent youngsters who were killed by CPM. The CPM thinks that they can remain in power in Kerala through violence. Kerala is a land of justice and these youngsters will get justice.” The Congress tweeted about the same from its Twitter handle. Rahul Gandhi also said, “BJP-RSS and CPM, both use violence. Violence is the weapon of the weak and Congress always fought it with non-violence.” Therefore, he clearly admitted that the Communist party uses violence and also claimed that the Congress will fight it with non-violence.

There is no denying the fact that the CPI(M) has used violence on a tremendous scale in Kerala. The situation in Kerala has become worse in recent years. Countless BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers have lost their lives in recent years owing to violence by the CPI(M) party members. The Communist party not just protects its thugs but also instigates them to commit such evil acts on a regular basis. The most shocking incident had come to the notice when working at the behest of the Left, the Kerala police had tortured Sreejith so badly that he lost his life in April 2018. CPI(M) had also provided protection to fundamentalist Islamic organisations like Popular Front of India (PFI) in Kerala which had numerous charges of murder, indulging in violence and communal clashes on its members.
No one can deny that what Rahul Gandhi said about the Left using violence in the state of Kerala. However, Congress’ plan to tackle CPM-backed violence is rather absurd. As per a TOI report, the Congress and CPI(M) are closing in on an alliance in the state of West Bengal. It was also reported that the dispute over two Lok Sabha seats, viz. Raiganj and Murshidabad has been settled in the favour of CPI(M). It is clear hypocrisy on the part of the Congress that while it is ready to ally with the CPI(M) in West Bengal, it is demonising the same party in the state of Kerala.
One cannot help but wonder why Congress is following two contradictory policies in respect of the same party. This is as opportunistic as political discourse can get. If the Congress is opposing CPI(M) in Kerala because the latter is guilty of violence, then it ought to follow the same logic in West Bengal. It is clear that the Congress is guided more by political opportunism than morality and logic in the run-up to the parliamentary elections.
