The confused secular and violently peaceful Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee shared a poem yesterday regarding the National Register of Citizens (NCR). The poem titled ‘Identity’ asks a lot of questions with the undertone of Mamata’s dissent with the issue of NRC final draft and the supposed deportation of illegal Bangladeshi refugees which is bound to follow. Mamata’s attempt to challenge the central government is feeble to say the least and has come at the most vulnerable time for her, at a time when her own companions seem to be deserting her and the left liberal cabal too does not want her to join their company. Mamata Banerjee’s programme which was scheduled to be held at St. Stephens College in New Delhi was called off just a few days to go. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders and spokespersons went into frenzy as soon as the news of cancellation went viral. Their leaders started blaming the BJP and “tremendous pressure by the saffron brigade” for the cancellation of programme.
TMC leaders before crying foul perhaps did not care to know a bit more about which party holds sway in St. Stephens College. St. Stephen’s has a wide variety of Christian students owing to the special quota they receive in the college, add to it the fact that it is dominated by left liberal crowd make the claims of TMC and Mamata even more irrelevant. St. Stephens in fact does not come under the Delhi University Students Union because of it being an autonomous college. The claims of Mamata and TMC therefore are laughable, the cancellation of her programme to be held if not done by Mamata herself, is a royal snub from the left liberal crowd.
The problem with Mamata is that she is hardly ready to accept her faults, ever. She has gotten snubbed in the past few months on the local and international levels. Her planned trip to China was cancelled because of Chinese government officials and authorities refusing to meet Mamata. Next cancellation of her planned programme at the Vivekananda event going to be held in September at Chicago which too was cancelled further raised her problems. The horrors that her TMC cadres unleashed all throughout West Bengal in the panchayat elections added fuel to the fire and led to her being sidelined in the Indian politics. Congress, BJP and the left parties bore the brunt of Mamata’s vengeful politics and the problems escalated to such a level that a senior TMC MP had to say, “First, the Vivekananda event in Chicago. Then her China visit and now St Stephens! Mamata Banerjee is giving the BJP-RSS sleepless nights. Let them keep trying, she cannot be silenced. The Bengal CM’s trip to Delhi is on schedule. She will be chief guest at the “Love your Neighbour ” conference organised by India’s largest Christian body, The Catholic Bishops Conference of India, on 31st August at 2.30 pm.” It seems as if today TMC leader are troubled with the need to pin Mamata’s blame on others.
It is sad how Mamata is being sidelined by whom she thought were her one time comrades in arms, but she has no one else than her attitude and appeasement politics to blame for this. Her stance on NRC and every other statement she makes reeks of appeasement politics. While it took Congress and other left parties some time to learn more about her spiteful, tyrannical nature the time thankfully has arrived when she is being shown the door. Her style of violent and spiteful politics should not be allowed to continue in India, the largest democracy of the world. The coming elections will prove the dissent which West Bengal’s residents have with Mamata and TMC.
