Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has cleared his stance on the punishment that should be meted out to rape convicts in his regime. CM Yogi clarified it on Wednesday that he is committed to changing the image of UP to “Uttam Pradesh”. CM Yogi has always maintained a tough stance against the criminals and goons in his state. The noose around the evil-doers’ neck has been tightening ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party led by CM Yogi came to power in UP. Keeping in line with his image of a firebrand leader who believes in getting things done, he has helped ease the discomfort of the common people of UP by nabbing the criminals. A record number of the criminals have been booked and sent to jail by the incumbent UP government ever since it came to power.
CM Yogi has reportedly said that the UP government is going to demand mandatory death penalty to those convicted of raping minors. A meeting of the top law and order officials, Women and Child development officers and the UP secretary was reportedly held in Lucknow. Following the meeting the reports of CM Yogi having decided to demand death penalty for the rapists began circulating in the media. He reiterated the zero tolerance policy towards crimes of his government will continue.
His statement “It is necessary that rapists get strict punishment. We are going to send a letter to the Centre to make necessary amendments to award capital punishments to rapists,” highlights the amount of concern for the victims of Unnao case. This demand is a commendable one and should be backed by other states as well. Probably the only way in which the crimes against women and children can be stopped right now is awarding a death sentence for the crime.
CM Yogi has decided to do the right thing here. The intolerance shown to the rapists will go further in boosting the morale of the people of India. Such a law should be unanimously welcomed and passed as soon as possible by the Centre. The horrific and shameful act of rape cannot be compensated by any measures but death penalty will make the criminals and perverts afraid before thinking of approaching a girl or a child with bad intentions.
Elaborating on the role of the police department in ensuring safety of women and children, Yogi added, “From beat constable to the SP- all should be made accountable and answerable. The senior officials should keep an eye and ensure immediate action against those found guilty of laxity.”
His advice for the police was to maintain cordial relations with the people and to help the public whenever they are approached. He also stressed upon the need to check the background of Station heads by saying, “The police should also do foot patrolling and establish dialogue with people. Those having dubious past should not be made SHOs.”
These are indicators that the CM Yogi led BJP government in UP is committed to clear its name from the recent controversies. CM Yogi is not going to stop before he can assure that every person in his state is free from fear and worries. The crime free state of ‘Uttam Pradesh’ is not a faraway dream but a soon to be reality under CM Yogi and his administration.
