Why the Biggest Newsbreak of the Year Was Also the Biggest Journalistic Failure of the Year
A year after the BJP government came to power, several surveys about its performance were conducted. Although the results of every section varied from survey to survey, one constant all across the board stood out. The question asked was which area did the government best perform in and the answer overwhelmingly, was foreign policy. This was a no-brainer really. That we had a government which considered our equations with the rest of the world as important as its duty within our borders was for all to see.
Whether it were the prime minister’s highly successful trips abroad, the huge foreign investments, the no-nonsense attitude in dealing with Pakistan, the craftily executed rescue from Yemen- the list goes on. It is believed that the prime minister micromanages foreign policy, but in Sushma Swaraj he found a competent executor. She wasn’t known to be a fan of the prime minster before the elections but she was quick to shed her political differences. She used her vast experience to drag the foreign ministry out of the indecisiveness and slumber it had fallen into. All that any Indian in distress abroad had to do was to tweet to her, and she would make sure the person was taken care of. Indian embassies and consulates worked with a proactivity never seen before.
But then, India had trigger-happy Arnab too. One cannot deny the fact that his vociferous stance against corruption and VIP culture has had an impact in the country. It certainly had more of an impact than the Aam Aadmi Party, which was founded upon these very values. But the reality of it all, is that Arnab is no crusader. He thrives on the misdeeds of those in power, he attracts more eyeballs the crankier he gets every evening. For the last one year, he hasn’t found much to cause a ruckus about. The atmosphere has been largely positive, those at the helm of affairs have been clean. How he took on the makers of a documentary on the Delhi gang-rape unfurling one irrational argument after the other, was a testament of the bankruptcy of issues to take on the establishment. (Also, a rival media house bagged the broadcasting rights of the documentary.) How he took on the Indian cricket team alleging a below par performance in the world cup, the team which made it to the semi-finals unbeaten and was defeated only by the home side which went on to become the world champions, was another instance. As his competitors caught up and he lost credibility day by day, he needed a big issue that he could champion to re-emerge as the undisputed number one.
It was planned to perfection. He promised to give his viewers the biggest political newsbreak of the year. He gave it at nine o’clock on a Sunday morning, and it was picked up by other media outlets at eleven. So as India lunched on Sunday, the media systematically brought disrepute to Sushma. No longer was she portrayed as our proficient foreign minister, but as the helper of a fugitive. The timing of the newsbreak confirmed that either those who broke the news or their sources, had an obvious motive: defame Sushma.
If one were to get into the charges levelled against her, why she wasn’t at fault would become abundantly clear. A case of conflict of interest, that some people are making it out to be, cannot arise here for a very simple reason. Just because she is the minister of external affairs, does it mean that any of her husband’s or daughter’s clients cannot interact with her ministry? Does it mean that her ministry cannot take a professional decision, however professional it might be, if it were to be favourable to one of her kin’s clients? In the case of Lalit Modi, how professional the decision actually was to give UK the go-ahead to process his documents and how genuine his humanitarian ground was, could have been debated back then if the media would have been fast enough to catch on to the story. But unfortunately, it wasn’t. Some weeks later, the Delhi high court restored Modi’s passport which had been revoked by the Indian government. So if the court thought it fine for Modi to have a passport and travel however and wherever he wanted to, on what ground is the media painting Sushma in a bad light for facilitating the same thing, and that too now? The ground on which the high court restored his passport is even more interesting. According to it, the violations which Modi was charged with do not require custodial interrogation. The accused can be interrogated using any alternative mode, like video conferencing. The UPA government declared him an absconder and revoked his passport without ever exploring such options. So when the media and political rivals compared this instance to helping Dawood Ibrahim out on humanitarian grounds if such a need ever arose, it was to put it lightly, mind-numbingly stupid.
Arnab and others might have generated the TRPs they so desperately seek by misrepresenting this story. At one point that Sunday morning, he went on to say he had information that the BJP had decided not to back Sushma. But if these suit clad men in our television studios have the courage to say that journalism is not about sensationalism and rhetoric, no, it is in fact about facts, bringing facts to the masses as fast and accurately as possible, then the biggest newsbreak of the year would also be the biggest journalistic failure of the year.
OK, it is the biggest journalistic failure, it was pre planned….so it is Arnab who created all those documents too? You proclaim that Sushma Swaraj is innocent….fine! Although i am not sure if there is an official code of conduct but doesn’t it make sense for you and your family members to have no business relationship with an economic offender when you are the External Affairs minister? How about Sushma Swaraj not asking him to return to india and cooperate with the legal investigations? Just because she has done excellent work as EA minister, does it mean she is infallible and can not be questioned even if her conduct is not aboveboard?
And how about Vasundhara Raje and her son’s business relationship with Lalit Modi? How about her ‘humanitarian’ assistance which she didn’t want anyone in india to know about?
And if there is no wrongdoing involved, then why the case is being fast tracked so suddenly now? Why the govt is now talking of a Red Corner notice being issued to force him to return to India now? What does the govt need to prove, that there was no underhand collusion of Modi with BJP leaders?
The truth is that Lalit Modi appears so self assured only because he knows he can ruffle many feathers in the political and business power echelons, so it suits all parties to keep him out of India.
If it were a minister from some other party, TFI would have blasted him/her to smithereens by now.
So stop hyperventilating just like Arnab Goswami you seem to dislike as much as I do. Try to be rational in your approach to the matter instead of being biased and judgmental.
Exactly my points Seema.
But to TFI, reporters like Rajat Sharma (In-spite of sexual harassment accusation) are still assets to journalism, as he chants Modi Modi,
and Arnub is a failure as he caught Sushma Swaraj Red handed.
Do you know what wrong Lalit Modi do, did he exploit tax payers money. What did NDA ministers benefit from him. What if congress wanted to show Lalit Modi in bad light because he exposed the wrong doing of UPA minister. Why was UPA was not able to arrest him from 2010 to 2014, in between Lalit Modi was also President of Rajasthan Cricket board. How come congress allowed all these things. You absolutely don’t have complete information, and media is just doing politics in this case.
tax payers money is being used everywhere buddy, kejriwal giving free bijli/paani etc. this is all coming from tax payers money or world bank loans (increasing fiscal deficit). We people still want everything for free, this is the way we have been tuned for last 60 yrs, nobody wants to change but everybody wants the change. So what Lalit Modi did has been done for all these years, why ruckus now?
//did he exploit tax payers money// Ha-ha….so if the money is not going into govt coffers it is not corruption! And what about the money belonging to us Indians only?
Yes, I don’t have complete information, nor does the author of this article or you. In fact, nobody knows who is colluding with whom, where, when, why and in which political party. And this is why we, as affected citizens, should be rational and cautious in taking sides and proclaiming anyone guilty or innocent. It is the court’s job. Media unfortunately tends to conduct their own public trials.
If the author’s objection was only about Arnab Goswami being a loud mouth and resorting to exaggeration for TRP, i wouldn’t have any issues. But when he completely absolves Sushma Swaraj and chooses to not even mention Vasundhara Raje and her son, I do have a problem.
I fail to understand why people have a problem in taking an impartial view and calling a spade a spade.
My concern is if the case is just media and opposition propaganda, I or India will lose a good performing foreign minister. India rarely gets a minister who is ever ready to work citizens of India. I don’t want to lose the good minister because of Media propaganda. If there is truth then yes the wrong doer need to be punished. But how many years you want to punish Lalit Modi, already it is more than 5 years, what is the status of the case is he guilty? I prefer to stand with Sushma instead of Arnab in this case.
She may have been working very well and media may have been raising a ruckus over her legal violations but is that reason enough to go on defending her, excusing her for favoritism and her inept handling of the case. Even I liked her and wanted her to be assigned a premier position in the new govt, but she has proved that she is just like the other ministers and
politicians who thrive on social contacts and favors.
But her party top brass has already given a clean chit to her and Vasundhara Raje. So I guess we should also stop continuing this fruitless debate.
1. The topic of discussion is not Vasundhara Raje. Raje and her son are at fault for sure.
2. In Swaraj’s case, there is no business involved, (till now, if there are some proofs uncovered I am open to accept), money transactions invlolved but without any buisness. So there is no legal ground there. You can pay for hotel bills of your friends without buying/selling any product. Yes there could be maligned interests, but cannot be proven.
3. Lalit Modi is not the only person involved in the IPL scam, many Congress/NCP/BJP leaders might have been benefited. Modi is just a face like Kalmadi – let’s see if anything comes out.
1. The author has very conveniently chosen to not discuss Vasundhara Raje and her son in the article. Do we need any more proofs than already available to prove their collusion?
2. Even if money transactions have not taken place, no business interest is there, it is still a case fit for ‘propriety’ issues. Why didn’t the EA minister take any of her fellow ministers in Home and Finance ministries and officials in her own ministry into confidence before writing to British authorities? She also did not disclose her husband and daughter being legal counsels for Lalit Modi.
3. Agree completely. We do not know who is hiding behind whom here. And that includes people in BJP too.
I am not saying Swaraj is innocent , but the case is not as strong as media hypes. Compare it with any of previous scams or media exposes, Swarajs expose even if considered 100% correct, is weakest so far, but media is projecting it like greatest scam ever ever. I am personally least bothered about Swarajs case and very much interested in cases of Raje and Vadras. It’s media who chose topic and impose on viewers and show only that much that could gather TRP which to me is nothing less than corruption.
@ammehta7:disqus who are you to judge is case is strong or not? by what standard do u judge? Better have some sense and see how big a legal violation she has done being on such a post.
What the BJP and its fans accused AAP leaders in case of Jitender Tomar, they are doing the same for Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje….. Defending and giving a clean chit to both. AAP top brass took their minister’s resignation and have decided to not support him any more. Hypocrisy where?
Media hypes selective cases to suit their own selfish motives, unknown to all of us. Do we have a choice here, even discussing things on this forum is not going to serve any purpose!
@seema_taneja:disqus you are in vain arguing with a bunch of idiotas who have got no reasonable thinking except for bhaktism …. my advice lets mind our business, its a waste of time making sense to a fool he will despise wisdom at the end.
Well said bro..!!
Kushal, what you are saying is all right but let’s be civil to one another here! Calling people with contrary opinion and beliefs bhakt, aaptard, Moditard is just another way of putting down and abusing the other persons.
yes seema I agree, I wont do that again
Beautifully put mam..!!
Do not bother. Modiji successfully diverted Media to Yoga Day celebrations.
Now Sushma Ji can prepare Visa papers for Assharamji too on humanitarian grounds, as all his witnesses are shot dead, which is good for you and the party.
After reading the title and the first four paragraphs of the article, I expected that the author may have discovered something that we all missed about ModiGate. Unfortunately, it was followed up as a naive partisan justification of Sushma Swaraj’s actions, which the party itself hasn’t offered till date!! The title and the build-up were utterly deceptive because presenting one view does not make for a journalistic failure, and certainly not the biggest one of the year. The author condemns Arnab’s journalism (which I truly am not a fan of) to sneak in a defense of Swaraj’s actions—which is indefensible. Some undisputed facts seemed to have escaped the author. (1) L-Modi is evading arrest and prosecution in India (nothing mind-numbing about the Dawood reference). His offense may not entail arrest per se, but disobeying summons to appear before a court or judicial authority is perfect grounds for arrest. (2) The humanitarian support was not limited to one visit to Portugal, but gave him multiple access to different countries. (3) Swaraj avoided Indian diplomatic channels completely. (4) She failed to disclose her family’s interest in obtaining help for their client L-Modi. (5) Her government decided not to pursue an appeal against the High Court’s decision, when every routine judgment is appealed by the Indian government to the Supreme Court, making it the country’s largest litigant.
With these undisputed facts, any journalist was entitled to question her conduct, as they did quite noisily during the UPA rule. If the author’s views are clouded by his affiliations, wouldn’t it be more honorable to admit that and express the party’s view and not hide behind these baseless attacks on journalism?
Well enumerated…All valid points!
Very well done..!!
TFI is just not what use to be.It sounds more and more like a BJP mouth piece. All the views expressed are skewed.
