The plight of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das has taken a deeply emotional turn after he was reportedly denied permission to meet his dying mother before her death, despite spending nearly two years behind bars in Bangladesh. The religious leader, who has become a prominent voice for the country’s Hindu minority, was eventually granted limited time to attend his mother’s funeral, but her final wish to see her son remained unfulfilled.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was arrested in November 2024 following a period of heightened political instability and growing concerns over attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. His arrest came months after widespread unrest following the political upheaval that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Hindu monk had been actively participating in peaceful demonstrations and public gatherings highlighting the security concerns of Hindus. He and other minority rights activists had called for stronger legal protections, accountability for attacks on religious minorities and greater institutional safeguards for vulnerable communities.
According to reports, a major rally was held at Chattogram’s historic Laldighi Maidan in October 2024, where participants presented an eight-point charter of demands. Among the demands were the creation of a separate ministry for minority affairs, stronger legislation to protect minorities and speedy trials in cases involving attacks on religious communities.
Soon after, a complaint was filed against Das and several others over allegations linked to the display of a saffron flag above Bangladesh’s national flag. The Hindu monk was arrested on 25 November 2024 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and subsequently transferred to Chattogram in connection with the case.
His arrest immediately triggered concern among members of the Hindu community and human rights observers. Supporters argued that Das had been peacefully raising legitimate concerns regarding the safety and security of Hindus, while prosecutors maintained that the allegations against him involved serious offences and required further investigation.
The legal proceedings became even more complicated after violence erupted near the Chattogram court premises following a hearing related to his bail petition. Lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was killed during the unrest, and several others were injured. The violence created an atmosphere of heightened tension around the case and was followed by additional criminal allegations against Das.
The Hindu monk later found himself facing multiple cases, including allegations of murder, attempted murder and vandalism. His supporters have maintained that the growing number of charges made it increasingly difficult for him to secure his release and raised questions about whether he was being disproportionately targeted because of his activism.
The situation surrounding his legal defence also became increasingly difficult. A scheduled bail hearing was reportedly delayed after lawyers faced threats and intimidation amid tensions following the violence in Chattogram. As the case continued, Das remained in prison while concerns over the condition of minorities in Bangladesh continued to attract international attention.
The issue also prompted a response from India. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern over the arrest and denial of bail to the Hindu monk, noting the wider context of attacks and violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
India’s government stressed that those responsible for attacks on minority homes, businesses and places of worship must be held accountable. It also raised concerns about a religious leader facing prosecution after participating in peaceful gatherings that sought greater protection and security for his community.
Meanwhile, ISKCON Bangladesh issued clarifications regarding Das, noting that he was no longer representing the organisation in an official capacity following disciplinary action taken earlier in 2024. However, the organisation also stated that it supported the right of individuals to peacefully advocate for the protection of Hindus and their places of worship.
For the Hindu monk, however, the political and legal controversy has now been overshadowed by a deeply personal tragedy. Reports said his 71-year-old mother repeatedly wished to see her son before she died. His family sought permission for him to visit her during her final moments, but the request was reportedly denied by authorities.
Das was eventually permitted a brief period of time to attend her funeral. Yet by then, the opportunity for a final meeting had already been lost. For his supporters, the episode has become one of the most heartbreaking moments in the prolonged imprisonment of the religious leader.
The story of the Hindu monk now represents more than a courtroom battle. It has become intertwined with broader concerns over minority rights, religious freedom and political tensions in Bangladesh. Supporters see his continued imprisonment as evidence of the difficult environment faced by those who publicly raise concerns about attacks on minorities.
As legal proceedings continue, the Hindu monk remains at the centre of an increasingly significant debate over justice, religious rights and the treatment of minority voices. But beyond the political arguments and criminal cases lies the personal cost of imprisonment: a son who was unable to answer his dying mother’s final wish, and a family left to mourn a loss that could never be reversed.
