Bangladesh’s High Court has rejected the bail plea of Hindu priest and former ISKCON leader Brahmachari Chinmoy Krishna Das. The ruling has intensified concerns over the condition of religious minorities under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government. It has also triggered strong political reactions in India.
The two-judge bench heard the matter linked to the 2024 murder case involving lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. Defence counsel Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said the court refused relief because witness testimonies are currently underway before a lower court in Chattogram. The bench decided not to interfere while the trial continues.
The High Court will also hear bail pleas in four additional cases filed against the priest. His continued imprisonment has become a rallying point for Hindu groups and minority rights advocates. The case now carries wider political and diplomatic significance.
Pawan Kalyan Questions Bangladesh’s Justice System
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan reacted sharply after the court’s decision. In a post on X, the Jana Sena chief said Chinmoy Krishna Das has spent more than 500 days in jail while the world remains silent.
Kalyan questioned the fairness of the judicial process in Bangladesh. He claimed lawyers representing the monk have faced threats and intimidation inside the court premises. He also asked whether speaking for the Hindu minority rights has become an offence in Bangladesh.
“When even his lawyers are intimidated, threatened, and silenced in court corridors, what justice are we speaking about?” Kalyan wrote on X.
He further said, “The world cannot stay silent when authorities treat a saffron-clad religious figure like a criminal for raising concerns about minority rights.”
Kalyan urged the Bangladesh government to provide immediate medical assistance to the monk and ensure fair legal access. He also criticised what he described as the silence of selective human rights activists and self-proclaimed secular voices.
Arrest and Sedition Charges Continue to Spark Debate
Chinmoy Krishna Das serves as the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote. Authorities arrested him on November 25, 2024, at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on sedition charges.
Officials accused him of insulting Bangladesh’s national flag during a rally organised in November 2024. Police later sent him to jail, where he remains in custody.
The controversy deepened after reports emerged that lawyers linked to his defence also faced threats during protests connected to the case. One lawyer representing him reportedly came under attack. The developments raised fresh concerns over the atmosphere surrounding the trial.
The Chinmoy Krishna Das case has now moved far beyond a routine legal dispute. It has become a larger political issue tied to minority rights, religious freedom, and the treatment of Hindu organisations in Bangladesh. The latest court decision is likely to intensify scrutiny of the Tarique Rahman government in the coming weeks.
