A grenade attack was carried out outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening (April 1).

According to media reports, the incident took place in the parking area near the office located in Sector 37. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

A GHD2P hand grenade, primarily manufactured in Pakistan, was used in the attack. The explosive is considered highly lethal, with an effective kill radius of around 5 to 10 meters, while its fragments can travel up to 20-25 meters, posing a serious risk to people nearby, said police sources reportedly.

New CCTV Footage Surfaces

Two new CCTV videos have surfaced in connection with the blast. A purported video circulating on social media shows a man holding a helmet, throwing an object resembling a grenade, while another person records the act. Moments after the object is hurled, both individuals flee the scene, followed by a loud explosion. However, officials have not yet verified the authenticity of the video.

Another video shows the same individuals running away and crossing to the other side of the road immediately after the explosion. Authorities are now scanning additional CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the accused. The faces of the individuals were not visible in the ten-second video clip.

The headquarters of the BJP’s Punjab unit is located in Sector 37, an area that also houses the Law Bhawan and a petrol pump.

A senior police officer reportedly said the blast occurred around 5:00 pm, prompting the immediate deployment of investigation teams. Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur said that, prima facie, it appears a small improvised explosive device was thrown near the party office. She confirmed that an alert regarding the explosion was received shortly after the incident.

Reprisal for Sikh Killings, Man Claims Online

In a related development, a social media post attributed to an individual named Sukhjinder Singh Babbar claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as retaliation for the killing of Sikh youths. The post also referenced the recent killing of Ranjit Singh, one of the accused in a case involving the murder of two police personnel in Gurdaspur on February 22.

The post allegedly read, “We want to tell the Indian system that it can use any means to eliminate Sikh youths of Punjab; they will give a befitting reply to it. Killers of Ranjit Singh in Gurdaspur will also not be spared,” the post purportedly read.

Meanwhile, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar described the blast as a direct “attack” on the party office.
