A terrorist was killed during an overnight encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, the Indian Army said on Wednesday (April 1).

The operation is still underway, with security forces continuing search efforts in the Arhama area of the district.

The joint operation is being carried out by two Assam Regiment units of the Army, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force.

According to the Army, the cordon was tactically reorganised amid intermittent firing, and troops responded effectively with a calibrated approach, resulting in the killing of one terrorist.

“During the night of 31 March, the cordon was tactically reorganised amidst the intermittent firing underway. Own troops effectively retaliated with a calibrated response, resulting in one terrorist being eliminated. Operation is in progress,” Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a post on X.

The operation, named “Op Arahama,” was launched on the night of March 31 in the Arhama area of Ganderbal district after inputs about suspicious movement.

“During the search, vigilant troops observed suspicious activity. On being challenged, terrorists opened fire and their own troops retaliated,” the Army said.

The joint operation continued for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, with security forces conducting a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the area. The region has been placed on high alert, with additional forces deployed. Search efforts are ongoing to ensure civilian safety.

According to media reports, officials said the operation will continue until the area is fully sanitised, with forces maintaining strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents.

This development comes weeks after a Pakistani terrorist was killed in another joint operation by the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.

The Army said that operation was launched on the intervening night of March 14–15 in the Buchhar area following specific intelligence inputs from the police about an infiltration attempt along the border.

“Based on a specific intelligence input provided by J&K Police regarding an infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched on the intervening night of March 14-15 in the general area of Buchhar in the Uri sector,” the Army said in a statement.
