The Reserve Bank of India has officially begun its annual Digital Payment Awareness Week under the mission ‘Har Payment Digital’, focusing on promoting safe, informed, and secure usage of digital payment platforms. Observed this year from March 9 to March 15, the campaign carries the theme ‘Safe Digital Payments’ with the advisory slogan ‘Thoda Dhyan Se!’ or ‘Be Careful’, emphasising caution alongside convenience in everyday transactions.
RBI officials have reminded users that they do not need to scan a QR code or enter a PIN simply to receive payments, highlighting the importance of vigilance against potential fraud. “Digital payments are transforming how India transacts, but safety must remain a priority. Citizens should adopt secure practices while using these platforms,” said an RBI spokesperson at the Kanpur office, which will be leading local outreach initiatives.
Promoting Awareness and Confidence
Through the awareness week, RBI seeks to strengthen public understanding of the country’s digital payment ecosystem, which has grown rapidly in recent years. India now records over 1,000 crore digital transactions every month, reflecting the widespread adoption of cashless methods across cities and towns.
In Kanpur, RBI’s office is organising campaigns to guide citizens on safe payment practices, demonstrating different digital channels, and providing tips to protect personal financial information. By combining practical guidance with education, the mission aims to empower both existing users and those new to digital payments.
Addressing the Digital Adoption Gap
Despite the surge in transactions, surveys indicate that a substantial portion of the population is yet to join the digital payments fold. Only around 42 percent of respondents nationwide report using digital payment methods, underlining the scope for expanding adoption. During the awareness week, banks, nonbank payment operators, media, and other stakeholders will participate in outreach to educate citizens and encourage secure usage.
