Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a transformative infrastructure push for Assam’s Bodoland region, launching projects worth over ₹4,500 crore in Kokrajhar through video conferencing. The initiative, spanning roads, railways, bridges, and connectivity upgrades, marks a decisive step in turning a region long marred by conflict into a hub of development and opportunity.
Infrastructure Push for Bodoland
A significant portion of the investment focuses on improving connectivity in the region. Over ₹1,100 crore has been earmarked for road development under the third phase of the Asom Mala campaign, aimed at strengthening Assam’s transport network.
Foundation stones were laid for six major road projects in the Bodoland Territorial Region, alongside four flyovers and two bridges to enhance regional mobility. Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated the groundwork for 36 bridges across 34 districts, further consolidating Assam’s transport infrastructure.
Rail connectivity is also set for a major upgrade. Modi laid the foundation stone for a Periodic Overhauling Workshop at Basbari in Kokrajhar district, a facility designed to bolster logistics and position the region as a trade hub. He also flagged off three train services: the Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express, and the Narangi–Agartala Express, which will support trade, tourism, and market access for farmers.
Bodoland’s Shift From Conflict to Peace
Reflecting on the region’s history, Modi recalled that Kokrajhar and the surrounding areas endured decades of violence and instability. Today, he said, the hills resonate with the rhythms of traditional instruments such as the Kham and Sifung, signalling a new atmosphere of harmony.
The Prime Minister credited the Bodo Peace Accord for lasting stability, noting that nearly 10,000 former insurgents have surrendered their arms and joined the mainstream, cementing Bodoland’s journey from unrest to development.
Development Commitments
The government has been fulfilling promises under the 2020 Bodo agreement, including granting Associate Official Language status to the Bodo language and implementing a special ₹1,500 crore development package for the Bodoland Territorial Council area. Infrastructure expansion, rail and road connectivity, and integration initiatives collectively aim to accelerate Bodoland’s growth while preserving its unique cultural identity.
Concluding his address, Modi expressed confidence that the momentum of development, backed by the support of Assam’s citizens, would realise the vision of a “Viksit Assam” and firmly anchor Bodoland on the path of sustained peace and prosperity.
