Demonstrating ideals of humanity, service, and social responsibility, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and former Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday pledged eye and organ and body donation after death.
As per an official release, the ex CM formally registered the pledge with Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, an organisation that has been actively engaged for years in spreading awareness about eye donation, organ donation, and body donation—considered among the highest forms of humanitarian service.
Born in 1942, Koshyari served as the second Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and has had a distinguished political career, including a term as a Member of Parliament, before his appointment as Governor of Maharashtra.
Living Reflection of Indian Values and Humanitarian Tradition
The decision of Bhagat Singh Koshyari resonates deeply with India’s timeless cultural ethos, where service to society and the nation transcends even the physical self.
Inspired by the legendary sacrifice of Maharishi Dadhichi, this pledge will significantly contribute to medical science, research, and education, while also restoring hope, vision, and life to countless individuals through eye and organ donation.
At a time when misconceptions and hesitation regarding organ and body donation persist in society, such a commitment by a senior, experienced, and widely respected public figure is expected to foster trust, awareness, and motivation among the general public.
A Powerful Message for Society and Youth
This exemplary step conveys a profound message—particularly to the younger generation—that service to humanity does not end with life. Even after death, one can continue to serve society in the most meaningful way.
Koshyari’s pledge reflects the true spirit of national and humanitarian service, where personal existence itself is dedicated to the greater good.
Statement from Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti
On this occasion, Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, Dehradun, expressed its deep gratitude to Bhagat Singh Koshyari, stating that his decision would provide renewed direction and momentum to the body donation and organ donation movement across the country.
The committee further expressed hope that this inspiring example would encourage people from all sections of society—especially educated youth, social workers, and public representatives—to come forward and participate in this noble cause.
The committee appeals to all citizens to voluntarily pledge for eye donation, organ donation, and body donation, thereby contributing to the welfare of society and nation-building even after their lifetime.
The pledge taken by Koshyari will undoubtedly remain a lasting source of inspiration—symbolizing compassion, humanity, and India’s rich cultural values—and will continue to guide future generations.
President of Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, Dr Mukesh Goyal, stated that this decision by former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari would provide new direction and renewed energy to the body donation and organ donation movement.
He added that this exemplary act would increase interest in this noble cause among youth, social workers, public representatives, and various sections of society.
Dr Mukesh Goyal further informed that so far, 570 people have taken a donation pledge through Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti.
