India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based Launcher, Capable of Hitting Targets 2000km Away

In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness, the country successfully test-fired the Agni-Prime Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher. The test, conducted on Thursday, marks the first time such a launch has been carried out from the Indian Rail network, placing India among a select group of nations capable of deploying mobile canisterised missile systems with cross-country mobility. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the achievement, describing it as a milestone in strengthening India’s strategic deterrence and self-reliance in defence.

The Agni-Prime, also referred to as Agni-P, is an advanced missile designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km. Equipped with next-generation guidance, navigation, and control systems, it is a canisterised weapon, which enhances storage, mobility, and readiness. Its dual-stage solid-fuel propulsion system and improved accuracy make it a crucial addition to India’s strategic arsenal. With these features, India strengthens its ability to counter threats from multiple fronts while maintaining credible deterrence.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took to his X handle to congratulate the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and the Armed Forces on the achievement. He lauded the teams for successfully executing the first-of-its-kind rail-based mobile launcher test. Singh emphasised that the success is not just a technological milestone but also a reflection of India’s growing self-reliance in defence capabilities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
