The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to convene its Parliamentary Board meeting on Sunday evening, August 17, 2025, to finalize its candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. This move follows the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, citing health reasons, leaving the position vacant.
Announcement in the NDA Parliamentary Party
According to information gathered by Tfipost, the BJP has already reached a consensus on the candidate. The Parliamentary Board meeting will formally approve the nominee soon. The final announcement is expected during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Parliamentary Party meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, at 9:30 AM in the Balyogi Auditorium of the Parliament Library Building.
In a strategic move, the NDA has authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda to select the alliance’s Vice-Presidential candidate. This decision was made during a meeting of NDA floor leaders, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and is expected to be accepted by all NDA parties.
As per the Election Commission’s schedule, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, 2025. If the election is contested, voting will take place on September 9, 2025, with results declared the same day.
Who will be the Next Vice- President?
The BJP’s selection process has sparked speculation about potential candidates. Names such as Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan have been mentioned in media reports. However, sources indicate that the party prefers a candidate closely aligned with its ideology and organizational ties, possibly favoring an RSS-affiliated individual.
The opposition, on the other hand, is reportedly working towards a united strategy for the Vice-Presidential election. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has convened a high-level meeting of opposition floor leaders to discuss a coordinated approach, aiming to present a single candidate against the NDA’s nominee.
The outcome of the BJP’s Parliamentary Board meeting on August 17 and the subsequent NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on August 19 will be pivotal in shaping the political landscape leading up to the Vice-Presidential election. The developments are being closely watched, as they will not only determine the next occupant of the Vice President’s office but also reflect the current dynamics within the ruling alliance and the opposition’s response.
