Three Indian nationals were kidnapped in Mali on July 1 during a violent assault on a cement factory, in what appears to be part of a broader wave of terrorist activity linked to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The incident took place at the Diamond Cement Factory in the Kayes region of western Mali, near the border with Senegal.
The attackers, armed and organized, stormed the facility and forcibly took the workers. While no group has directly claimed responsibility for this abduction, JNIM has acknowledged carrying out multiple coordinated attacks across the region on the same day, targeting army posts and public infrastructure in several towns, including Diboli, Nioro du Sahel, Gogoui, Molodo, and Niono.
India’s Response
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep concern over the abduction and strongly condemned what it called a “deplorable act of violence.” Indian authorities have urged the Government of Mali to take urgent and effective action to ensure the safe and speedy release of the hostages.
The Indian Embassy in Mali’s capital, Bamako, is working closely with local officials, security agencies, and the cement company. The families of the abducted workers are being regularly updated. Senior officials in New Delhi are actively monitoring the situation.
The MEA has also issued an advisory to all Indian nationals currently in Mali, warning them to remain vigilant and stay in close contact with the embassy.
Background: Escalating Tensions in Mali
The abduction highlights growing instability in Mali and the wider Sahel region, where extremist violence has been steadily increasing. JNIM, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, has expanded its operations across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The group frequently targets both civilians and security forces.
This incident comes amid broader geopolitical shifts in the region. Mali’s government has distanced itself from Western military alliances and increased cooperation with Russian-backed forces. Analysts believe this security vacuum has emboldened terrorist groups to step up attacks, particularly in less-protected areas.
Ongoing Efforts
India is currently exploring all diplomatic and security avenues to secure the release of its citizens. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as authorities gather more information.
