West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday visited the family members of two individuals who were brutally killed during the recent anti-Waqf Act Islamist violent protests in the Murshidabad district. The victims, identified as Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, were found dead in their house in Jafrabad locality of Shamsherganj with multiple stab wounds, according to officials. A senior Raj Bhavan official confirmed the governor’s visit and said that he offered condolences and assured all possible support to the bereaved family. “The family has demanded a CBI probe into the murder. The governor has taken note of their demand and promised proactive action,” the official stated.
The tragic deaths occurred amid widespread violence between April 8 and April 12 in Murshidabad and neighboring areas, triggered by opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025. At least three people, including the father-son duo, lost their lives, and over 274 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest that engulfed the Muslim-majority districts of Dhulian, Suti, Jangipur, and Shamsherganj. Prior to his visit to Jafrabad, Governor Bose had interacted with other affected families at a guest house in Farakka. On Friday, he had also toured Malda, despite West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s request to postpone the visit in light of the tense situation. There, he visited a relief camp sheltering families displaced by the violence.
“I met the family members who are at the camp here. They have briefed me in detail. There will certainly be proactive action taken,” Governor Bose said during his Malda visit. Sources from the Raj Bhavan indicated that Governor Bose will continue his tour of the violence-hit areas in the coming days, with visits planned to Dhulian, Suti, and Jangipur. As the situation remains tense but stable, Governor CV Ananda Bose visit is seen as a crucial intervention aimed at addressing victims’ grievances and ensuring accountability in the investigation.
