The controversy surrounding Justice Yashwant Varma continues to intensify as the Supreme Court raised serious questions regarding the fire incident at his residence and the discovery of burnt currency notes.
Supreme Court poses three pointed questions to Justice Yashwant Varma
The apex court issued three key questions to Justice Varma, seeking clarification on the presence of a large amount of cash, its source, and who removed the burnt notes from the room.
The first question posed by the Supreme Court was how Justice Varma accounted for the substantial amount of cash found in the room at his residence.
The second question sought clarification on the source of the money, while the third question aimed to identify the person who removed the burnt notes on the morning of 15th March 2025.
Additionally, the Supreme Court directed Justice Varma not to destroy his mobile phone or alter any data or messages.
Justice Yashwant Varma, in his response, denied any knowledge of the cash in the storeroom.
He claimed that neither he nor any member of his family had any awareness of the money, emphasizing that no one had seen the cash before the fire incident.
According to Varma, the cash found in the room had no connection to him or his family.
Regarding the second question, he stated that, given the absence of any knowledge about the cash, there was no need to clarify its source.
Justice Varma further explained that he was traveling with his wife in Madhya Pradesh when the incident occurred and returned to Delhi only on the evening of 15th March.
He met Justice Upadhyaya on 17th March at the Delhi High Court Guest House, where he was shown photographs and videos of the burnt currency. Varma reiterated his claim of having no knowledge of the cash found in the storeroom.
The third question regarding the removal of the burnt notes was also addressed by Justice Varma, who denied being involved in the removal.
He stated that neither he nor his wife was aware of the alleged removal of the sacks of burnt notes, as they had not been shown the currency.
In light of these serious allegations, the Supreme Court has formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The controversy also involves Justice Varma’s name being mentioned in an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) by the Enforcement Directorate, both linked to a fraud case involving Simbhaoli Sugars Ltd.
