In a key development for India’s electronics industry, iPhone manufacturing giant Foxconn is planning to open a new facility in Greater Noida amid the ongoing US China tariff war. The Taiwanese tech giant, in discussions with the Uttar Pradesh government for a new plant, is likely to create up to 40,000 jobs and drastically uplift the local economy.
According to sources, two rounds of meetings have already been held between UP government officials and Foxconn representatives in Delhi and Lucknow. The new facility is likely to focus on mobile phone manufacturing and will further strengthen Foxconn’s footprint in India, where it already operates multiple plants. Being Apple’s biggest contract maker in the world, Foxconn is instrumental in the manufacturing of iPhones.
Foxconn’s new Greater Noida facility, which is planned to be built over 300 acres, will also have residential facilities for its employees. The project is distinct from Foxconn’s 50-acre joint venture with HCL for an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) facility. That venture is currently awaiting Cabinet approval, with Foxconn planning to invest $37.2 million for a 40 percent stake. Talks have already begun with L&T and Taiwanese firm CTCI for the JV’s execution.
Officials believe the Noida-Greater Noida belt is an ideal location for Foxconn’s expansion, given that the region already contributes to nearly 50 percent of India’s mobile phone exports.
“There is no better place than UP to have a facility for Apple. Locating it in Noida will add to the ecosystem in the region,” said a source familiar with the discussions.
Foxconn began manufacturing the iPhone 15 at its Tamil Nadu plant in Sriperumbudur in 2023. Following that, Apple ramped up exports, shipping over 600 tons—or 1.5 million iPhones—to the US, aided by efforts to streamline customs processes at Chennai airport. The upcoming Noida facility is expected to be a key player in Apple’s growing India strategy.
