On Monday, March 24, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar made an unusual statement during a press meet as part of the party’s ‘Palayan Roko Naukri Do Yatra’ in Bihar. He claimed that capitalists and businessmen are targeting Bihar’s water resources due to the increasing global water crisis. According to him, the BJP-led development projects in the state are merely a front to exploit these resources.
Kanhaiya Kumar specifically pointed at the Bharatmala Project, questioning its purpose in Bihar. “Bihar does not have anything, so why are roads being built? It is because Bihar has water, and water will soon become more valuable than petrol,” he asserted. He alleged that industries were deliberately not established in Bihar when employment was needed, and now that automation has reduced the requirement for local labor, small industrial units are being set up with the hidden agenda of extracting Bihar’s water.

He further accused the BJP government of constructing roads not for the benefit of the people, but to facilitate the transport of Bihar’s resources elsewhere. “For whom are they building roads? To loot the resources here and take them away,” he added, insinuating a conspiracy behind infrastructural development.
Notably, the Bharatmala Project is a major initiative aimed at boosting India’s road infrastructure. It includes the development of 26,000 km of economic corridors, along with the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and North-South and East-West (NS-EW) corridors. Additionally, the project aims to improve freight traffic efficiency by developing 8,000 km of inter corridors and 7,500 km of feeder routes, as well as ring roads and bypasses to ease congestion in 28 cities.
Kanhaiya Kumar resorted to fear-mongering by invoking businessman Gautam Adani’s name, suggesting that a BJP-led Bihar government would hand over state resources to Adani. “Industrialists have their eyes on Bihar’s resources. If BJP wins Bihar, it means Bihar’s resources will be in the hands of Adani,” he claimed.
