The Delhi High Court has granted bail to the Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar in a murder case. The court allowed his release after he provided a Rs 50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount.
The bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Narula granted bail to the Olympic wrestler. Kumar is the main accused in the death of a junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar who was killed in May 2021. The two-time Olympic medallist was charged with murder, rioting , unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy after the 23-year-old junior wrestler succumbed to injuries when he was attacked by Kumar and his accomplices.

On the fateful day of 4 May 2021, Dhankar was brutally assaulted by Sushil Kumar and others in the parking lot of Chhatrasal Stadium, New Delhi. The accused assaulted him over a property dispute.

In their 170-page chargesheet, Delhi Police named Kumar as the main accused. They cited Dhankar’s reluctance to vacate the flat and rumours that Kumar feared him.
Following the attack, Sushil Kumar was on the run for over two weeks before he was arrested from Mundka in western Delhi.
As per the Delhi Police, the conflict started over a flat in Model Town which was owned by Kumar and Dhankar had previously lived there. The dispute over rent quickly escalated after it was alleged that Dhankar abused Kumar. It led to a brawl outside of Chhatrasal Stadium which proved fatal for Dhankar as he later died from cerebral damage caused by blunt force trauma.
