In response to growing concerns over fraudulent birth and death certificates issued to suspected illegal immigrants, the Maharashtra government has imposed a six-month hold on delayed applications. This decision comes after Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya stated that over 25,000 fake birth certificates were issued to Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants across districts like Malegaon, Amravati, and Akola. The government aims to conduct a thorough review to safeguard the integrity of official records.

Kirit Somaiya highlighted alarming figures, highlighting 4,318 fraudulent birth certificates were issued in Malegaon, 4,537 in Amravati, and over 15,000 in Akola. These certificates,which were based on forged documents, enabled illegal immigrants to settle in the state. In response, the Maharashtra Home Department has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to scrutinize the issuance of birth and death certificates in affected districts.

During the six-month investigation period, authorities will suspend delayed applications, ensuring no further misuse of the system. The SIT will examine thousands of records, particularly in districts where fraudulent activities have been reported.
Previously, applications delayed by over a year required judicial approval. However, a 2023 amendment allowed district collectors and sub-divisional officers to approve them directly. While intended to streamline procedures, this policy change has been criticized for facilitating large-scale fraud. Reports suggest that this loophole was exploited, particularly in areas with high immigrant populations. As scrutiny intensifies, officials are also reviewing recent birth certificate issuances in 2024. Districts like Latur, Parbhani, and Jalna recorded thousands of registrations, prompting further concerns.
