On the Republic Day of India, a man was arrested for vandalising the statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar at the Town Hall on Heritage Street, Amritsar, near the Golden Temple. The incident has sparked outrage, with police stating that the motive behind the act remains unknown. A case has been registered, and the accused is under interrogation. The incident highlights the inefficiency of the AAP led Punjab Government in combating the hate and disrespect to Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution.
The video circulating on social media platforms shows the man climbing the statue using a steel ladder and striking it with a hammer. The act has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and the public alike.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal called the act “heinous” and expressed that it hurt the sentiments of millions. He demanded stern action and a thorough investigation into the incident, stating, “Let’s stand united against such vile attempts to create divisions in our society.”
Similarly, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh criticized the law and order situation under Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann government. “The desecration of BR Ambedkar’s statue and the Constitution of India on Republic Day is a disgrace. The Mann government is failing to maintain law and order,” Chugh remarked, highlighting the location’s proximity to a police station.

Political Parties are highlighting the anti-Dalit and Anti-Ambedkar mindset with which the AAP operates following the incident. Congress too has come out to point fingers against the AAP led Punjab Government Reacting to the vandalism of Dr. BR Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar, Congress candidate from New Delhi, Sandeep Dikshit, expressed serious concern over the incident. “This is a grave issue, especially as it occurred on January 26, a day when security is typically heightened. It’s highly unfortunate, and I strongly condemn it,” he said.
Dikshit criticized the AAP government, questioning the absence of security in Punjab. “Where is your police? You always claimed that the police should serve the people. Yet, today, the entire Punjab Police force is stationed in Delhi for election purposes.” He further accused Arvind Kejriwal of neglecting Babasaheb’s legacy and prioritizing electoral gains. “Kejriwal neither respects Babasaheb nor cares about the people. He is solely focused on winning elections at any cost,” Dikshit remarked.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Jagjit Singh Walia confirmed the incident, saying that a few miscreants attempted to tamper with the statue, and further investigation is ongoing to uncover the motive behind the act. The incident has brought attention to the deteriorating law and order in Punjab.
