The resolution urging the central government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir by the newly elected regime of Omar Abdullah has been cleared by lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha, and it will now be sent to the Union Home Ministry to get the needful done.
“The cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Omar Abdullah on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution for restoration of statehood in its original form,” a news agency quoted an official spokesperson saying.
“The restoration of statehood will be a beginning of a healing process, reclaiming the constitutional rights and protecting the identity of people of Jammu and Kashmir. The cabinet has authorized the chief minister to take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Government of India for restoration of statehood,” he added.
Interestingly, the Abdullah cabinet did not say a word on the controversial Article 370 that was removed on August 5, 2019 by the Narendra Modi government.

The Central government had also changed the status of the erstwhile state on the same day by converting it into two Union Territories.
However, the Modi government has been quite sensitive to the demand of restoration of statehood to the region, and has announced on several occasions that it would do so.
According reports, Abdullah will visit New Delhi in the coming days to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers on the issue of statehood.
Meanwhile, the J&K cabinet has also decided to call the Union Territory’s assembly on November 4, and advised the LG to address the House.
