India and France have just concluded a key defense treaty. The contract is to acquire 26 Rafale M aircraft for the Indian Navy in this Financial year as per reports. After some rounds of extensive discussion, France agreed to cut the price, thus making the purchase cheaper. The total deal is worth more than Rs 50,000 crores and is expected to be closed by the end of 2024.
The new aircraft will bring an extra edge to India’s naval power on its aircraft carriers. They are meant to substitute the old MiG-29K fighters, which are in operation in the Navy. The order includes 22 single-seat aircraft and four twin-seater trainer models. This is the second time India has bought Rafale jets, the first being in 2016 when 36 planes were purchased for the Air Force. The naval fighter acquisition as well as an order for three additional Kalvari class submarines to be built in Mumbai are the two major defence deals being processed with France.
