On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma labeled the Congress protests near Guwahati as “Naxalite tactics” and directed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to file a case against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly “provoking the crowd.” The Congress leader is heading the party’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Manipur to Mumbai. Earlier, Congress workers, barred from entering Guwahati, clashed with Assam police. Chief Minister Sarma, in a social media post on platform X, asserted that such “Naxalite tactics” were unfamiliar to Assam’s cultural ethos.
“These actions are not aligned with Assamese culture; we pride ourselves on being a peaceful state. Such ‘Naxalite tactics’ are entirely foreign to our way of life. I’ve directed the DGP of Assam Police to initiate a case against your leader, Rahul Gandhi, citing the footage you’ve shared on your handles as evidence. Your disorderly conduct and disregard for agreed-upon guidelines have led to a significant traffic jam in Guwahati,” stated Sarma on platform X.
Earlier today, the Congress leader escalated his criticism of the Assam Chief Minister, alleging that the BJP’s ‘intimidation tactics’ against the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra would ultimately work in favor of the party’s journey. In response, Biswa Sarma labeled the Congress workers’ disruptive behavior as “Naxalite tactics” and instructed the DGP of Assam Police to file a case against Rahul Gandhi for violating guidelines, resulting in a substantial traffic disruption in Guwahati. Addressing a press conference in Kamrup, the Congress leader referred to the Assam CM as “the most corrupt Chief Minister of the country.”
“The chief minister of the state is considered one of the most corrupt in the country. Every time I visit the state, people express concerns about massive unemployment, corruption, rising prices, and the challenges faced by farmers. They feel that the youth are struggling to secure jobs here. These are the issues we are addressing, and our efforts have been quite successful,” he stated.
The Congress MP further mentioned that the tactics employed by the Assam CM would actually benefit their yatra. “Whatever the Assam CM is doing against the Yatra ends up helping us. The publicity we might not have gained otherwise is coming our way thanks to the actions of the Assam CM and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Currently, the main focus in Assam is on the Yatra. Their intimidation tactics inadvertently serve our cause. Our message of Nyay is reaching the people, and even BJP supporters who protest are acknowledging us by waving hands,” he added.
He further emphasized that this Yatra revolves around the five pillars of NYAY, making it the central issue in Assam. “Behind this Nyay Yatra, there is an idea of Nyay. The Congress party will unveil its five pillars of justice in the coming month, providing the nation with a source of strength,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Congress workers, prevented from entering Guwahati, clashed with Assam Police. Rahul Gandhi asserted today that he was denied the opportunity to engage with the state’s students. As the Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed its 10th-day journey from Assam, tight security measures were implemented at Khanapara Area, the entry point to Guwahati.
Barricades and a significant presence of police officials were observed in the Khanapara Area, where Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra is scheduled to reach today. According to updates from Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s official handle on X, the Congress will host a press conference later today, following which the yatra will continue its journey and make a halt at Bishnupur in Assam.
