How Mahua Moitra is scripting her own political demise

Can asking questions earn you millions of dollars? Well, if you’re Mahua Moitra, you can! The rabble-rouser from the Trinamool Congress is once again at the center of a controversy that could have far-reaching consequences for her and her party.

On the 15th of October, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey leveled serious allegations against Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra. Based on a complaint filed by advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, Dubey alleged that businessman Darshan Hiranandani paid for most of the questions asked by Moitra in the Lok Sabha in cash and gifts.

What makes this scandal even more intriguing is the nature of the questions posed by Mahua Moitra. Interestingly, most of them had sinister undertones, often taking jibes at India’s infrastructural capabilities. It’s also no secret that Mahua has been backing anti-India elements in her bid to pull down PM Modi. The Hindenburg fiasco being a glaring testimony of the same.

In return for her services, Darshan Hiranandani, the entrepreneur in question, showered her with crores in cash and an array of luxury items. Home redesigning, shoes, purses, diamonds, jewelry, iPhones, scarves, and more. This claim is in an affidavit by an SC lawyer who stated that Mahua was “very close” to him. As per several media reports, the lawyer is miffed with the way he was sidelined, and now he won’t rest unless he sees Mahua behind bars.

Interestingly, CJI DY Chandrachud has constituted a 7-judge bench to re-evaluate the 1998 Supreme Court judgment which granted legislators immunity on bribery charges for any speech or vote in Parliament. This means that the Lok Sabha Speaker may stretch the proceedings until the Supreme Court revokes immunity for legislators. If this actually happens, Mahua Moitra could become the FIRST MP to head to Tihar Jail after that.

But that’s not all. A complaint has also been filed with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It may proceed with charges of “Waging War Against the Nation.” This is based on Mahua’s deliberate attempts to malign Bharat’s image by linking the Prime Minister and Home Minister with the Adani Group in Parliament, potentially undermining Bharat’s strategic projects via the Adani Group. To some, this expose was much needed.

If the allegations are proven right, not only will Mahua Moitra’s political career be in jeopardy, but the image of the Trinamool Congress will also suffer a severe blow. As a prominent member of her party, her actions and choices reflect on the entire organization. If she is found guilty of accepting bribes for asking provocative questions in Parliament, it could tarnish the party’s reputation and integrity.

The timing of these allegations is also significant. India is heading into a critical political phase, with numerous regional and national elections on the horizon. The results of these elections will determine the balance of power in various states and, by extension, at the national level. Any allegations of corruption or misconduct involving a sitting Member of Parliament can have far-reaching consequences.

The allegations against Mahua Moitra have the potential to reshape the political landscape in India. If proven true, they could result in her losing her seat in Parliament and facing legal consequences. The Trinamool Congress, as a party, may also suffer from the fallout. However, it is essential to await the outcome of the investigations before passing judgment. The legal process must take its course to ensure justice and fairness prevail.
