Azam Khan and family sentenced to 7 years imprisonment

Azam Khan prison sentence: It appears that the political journey of Azam Khan and his family has reached a significant crossroads, and not in their favor. Once a powerful figure in the Samajwadi Party, Azam Khan now faces a harsh reality—a seven-year prison sentence. This verdict, delivered by the MP-MLA court in Rampur, has left Azam Khan, his son Abdullah Azam, and his wife Tanzeem Fatima with no choice but to prepare for a stint behind bars.

Abdullah Azam, who achieved a victory in the 2017 Lok Sabha elections from the Swar constituency, found himself in a legal quagmire. He was accused of employing a counterfeit birth certificate to contest the elections, as he hadn’t reached the required age at the time. In addition, he was found guilty of possessing two different birth certificates.

The birth certificate used for Abdullah Azam’s 2017 election campaign indicates his date of birth as 30th September 1990, and this document was issued in Lucknow in 2015. A second birth certificate, issued from Rampur in 2012, asserts that his birthdate is 1st January 1993, aligning with the date of birth on his educational certificates.

It’s worth noting that the birth certificate from Rampur Municipality states his birthplace as Rampur, while the one from Lucknow records his birthplace as Lucknow.

Azam Khan’s legal woes precede this recent conviction, as he had previously been found guilty of multiple offenses, including land grabbing, extortion, and even attempted murder. While some of these cases are under appeal, he has secured bail in others.

In December 2022, Azam Khan was handed a three-year prison sentence, which led to the loss of his assembly membership. Subsequently, the Rampur by-election saw Akash Saxena emerge as the victor, becoming the first Hindu MLA from the Rampur assembly seat. The seven-year sentences for Azam Khan, Abdullah Azam, and Tanzeem Fatima stem from a complaint filed by Akash Saxena.

The downfall of Azam Khan is significant, as it marks the unraveling of a political powerhouse. His influence once extended far and wide, both within the Samajwadi Party and in his domain of Rampur. However, the legal entanglements and convictions have resulted in the loss of his political clout and, more importantly, his freedom.

The case against Abdullah Azam, the younger member of the Khan family, centers on his alleged use of a forged birth certificate during the 2017 Lok Sabha elections. This birth certificate discrepancy raises questions about the authenticity of his candidature at that time. The court’s ruling to imprison him for seven years underscores the gravity of the charges against him.

The stark contrast between the two birth certificates used by Abdullah Azam also deepens the legal complications. The certificate issued in Lucknow in 2015 declares his birthplace as Lucknow, while the Rampur-issued certificate from 2012 lists Rampur as his birthplace. These inconsistencies only serve to further complicate his case.

For Azam Khan, this is not the first time he has been embroiled in legal troubles. The laundry list of charges against him, including land grabbing, extortion, and attempted murder, is a testament to the complexity of his legal battles. While some of these cases remain under appeal, the recent sentencing marks another chapter in his tumultuous legal journey.

Azam Khan’s political career, once marked by prominence and power, now faces an uncertain future. The seven-year prison sentence, coupled with previous convictions, represents a significant fall from grace. The impact of this decision extends not only to him but also to his family, including his son Abdullah Azam and wife Tanzeem Fatima, who must now grapple with the consequences of the court’s ruling.

The political landscape in Rampur has also undergone a transformation in the wake of Azam Khan’s legal troubles. Akash Saxena’s victory in the by-election and his historic position as the first Hindu MLA from the Rampur assembly seat underscore the shifts occurring in the region’s political dynamics.
