Rajasthan Election 2023: The state of Rajasthan has always been a hotly contested battleground for Indian politics, and the upcoming elections are no exception. The Congress party has been at the helm of the state government, led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, but the BJP is determined to stage a strong comeback. However, a critical challenge lies in BJP’s perceived indecisiveness in projecting a strong and popular local leadership.
Let’s bring to light this very ‘indecisiveness’ of BJP, and why this can ironically work in their favor in Rajasthan.
Rajasthan Election 2023: The Leadership Crisis Hits Hard
One of the most significant obstacles confronting the BJP in Rajasthan is the absence of a clear and charismatic Chief Ministerial candidate. The political landscape was further complicated by the polarizing figure of Vasundhara Raje Scindia, the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and a prominent BJP leader.
Her tenure had garnered mixed reactions from both within the party and the state, and many expressed aversions towards her leadership during the 2018 assembly polls. The now-famous slogan “Modi tujhse bair nahin, Vasundhara teri khair nahin” echoed across the streets, highlighting the level of discontent and public sentiment. Unfortunately, Vasundhara is that snobbish leader, who would neither do anything good, nor would let anyone else it.
How BJP’s flaw can be its biggest asset?
While the faceless strategy may appear as a tactical move to avoid internal factionalism, it does come with its set of risks. Rajasthanis, who are deeply invested in state politics, may perceive this indecisiveness as a lack of confidence in the BJP’s own potential leaders.
However, this very strategy can prove beneficial in two ways. One, the Congress will not know whom to attack first. Vasundhara is their favorite punching bag, but if she is not the CM face, they will have a hard time. The other reason is that this strategy may give BJP enough time to decide on the right person for the job, since Vasundhara Raje is CLEARLY not the one!
Besides, The Congress government in Rajasthan, led by Ashok Gehlot, faced internal conflicts between Gehlot and Sachin Pilot. However, the party managed to navigate through these challenges by resolving the conflict, maintaining the government’s stability.
Yet, this political maneuvering might come at a cost in the upcoming Rajasthan Election 2023. Voters might be apprehensive of voting for a party that has not proven its capability to maintain a stable government for a full term, and this presents the BJP with a golden opportunity to highlight its potential to provide a more decisive and reliable administration.
Is this miracle possible?
Now comes the most crucial question: Is this strategy even workable? To an extent yes, if you look at the rather successful Maharashtra model, which the party had adopted in 2014. In Maharashtra, BJP’s decisive victory was credited to the absence of a Chief Ministerial face during the campaign. Like Rajasthan, Maharashtra was a formidable fortress to conquer, with internal squabbles and the party’s presence being limited.
The party instead focused on crucial issues and governance, leading to a post-poll alliance with the Shiv Sena and ultimately resulting in the rise of Devendra Fadnavis as a formidable leader, both regionally and on a national level. This historical perspective gives rise to the question: can a similar approach work in Rajasthan? Most likely, if BJP hasn’t resorted to the tactics in Karnataka.

BJP’s indecisiveness in projecting a strong local leadership in Rajasthan presents both risks and opportunities. While the adoption of the Maharashtra model could allow the party to focus on pressing issues and governance, it may also raise concerns about the BJP’s ability to provide stable leadership.
To secure victory in the upcoming Rajasthan Election 2023, it is essential for the BJP to address these challenges effectively. By assessing public sentiment, selecting a candidate who can inspire confidence, and articulating a clear vision for the state, the BJP can potentially turn this perceived flaw into a strategic advantage and solidify its base in the glorious state of Rajasthan.
