Junagadh Police News: A video from Junagadh recently circulated on social media, sparking outrage and provoking fierce debate. It showed local police employing rough measures against certain individuals, which caused some observers to cry out against perceived tyranny. However, as in any situation, it is crucial to understand the context and the fuller picture.
In this article we will bring forth the reality of the Junagadh incident, and why it was actually the other way around.
The incident in question
The incident occurred on June 16th when, according to police reports, an Islamist mob reacted violently to a notice regarding illegal encroachment on the walls of a local dargah. The crowd, reportedly comprised of around 500 to 600 men and women, responded to the notice with stones and extensive violence, injuring four policemen and a civilian.
A report by Divya Bhaskar, based on the complaint filed by a female police officer at Junagadh police station, provides more insight into the incident. The police officer’s complaint states that upon receiving a message in their social media group, the police officers were asked to report immediately to the PI at Majewadi Dargah. Upon reaching, they found the gathered crowd protesting against the notice.

The Junagadh Police officers, according to the FIR, requested the mob to adopt legal means of expressing their discontent. However, this plea only seemed to further agitate the crowd. The men and women began to shout slogans, including ‘Allahu Akbar,’ and proceeded to attack the police, damaging both government and private vehicles parked on the road.
2002 reloaded?
The details in the FIR paint an alarming picture. The agitated crowd reportedly shouted inflammatory slogans, such as ‘burn everything’, ‘hit the police’, ‘no one shall be spared alive’, and “If we kill the police, no one will come our way.” Such behavior goes far beyond peaceful protest; it descends into the realm of public disorder and potential catastrophe.
The mob’s actions escalated even further when they began to set fire to motorcycles parked near the dargah and pelted stones at vehicles and pedestrians. A passing bus was also targeted, with its windows shattered by thrown sticks. The chaos resulted in injuries to four police officers and one Hindu civilian, who later tragically died during treatment.

These accounts reveal that the Junagadh police were facing a significant threat to public safety. The extremist group’s violent actions and threatening rhetoric suggested that their intention was to incite terror, particularly among the Hindu population. Therefore, when contextualizing the viral video of police action, it becomes clear that the police were responding to a severe and immediate threat.
Is self-defence a crime?
This situation forces us to examine the delicate balance that law enforcement must maintain when faced with potential riots and violent mobs. In this instance, were the police actions an overreach of power, or were they a necessary response to prevent further violence and potential loss of life? In any case, it is clear that the officers in question were operating under extreme circumstances with the primary aim of preventing an escalation into full-blown chaos. Their efforts were directed at protecting public safety and maintaining peace in a rapidly deteriorating situation.
To sum it up, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement authorities. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the full context before passing judgment based on isolated footage or single-source reports.
And in order to truly understand and appreciate the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in their mission to maintain public safety, it is essential to take a step back and consider the broader picture. These dedicated individuals are confronted with an intricate web of pressures and complexities that require them to make split-second decisions in high-stakes situations.
From balancing the protection of innocent lives to upholding the principles of justice, law enforcement officers navigate a delicate equilibrium that demands courage, resilience, and a deep commitment to serving the community. It is through recognizing and acknowledging these multifaceted challenges that we can gain a profound appreciation for the demanding nature of their role.
