Atiq Ahmed’s court appearance last month, after being brought to Prayagraj from Sabarmati jail, caused constant apprehension among his family members. Some even speculated that Atiq might not show up in court, fearing he could meet the same fate as Vikas Dubey, who was killed in an encounter. This was primarily due to the Yogi government’s increased popularity for strictly dealing with mafias, including the high-profile encounter of Vikas Dubey.
Asad Ahmed encounter
Following Asad’s encounter on April 13th, Special DG for Law and Order, Prashant Kumar, held a press conference where he praised the UP government’s zero-tolerance policy towards the mafia. The special DG said that the result of this policy is before us, referring to Asad’s encounter.

He further stated that Asad was planning to help Atiq and Ashraf escape from the UP Police’s custody. Atiq Ahmed’s repeated statements expressed concerns about being killed by the police while being transported, which may have prompted his son to plan a daring attack on the convoy in order to free him.

Police foiled an attack
SDGP Prashant Kumar stated, “We received information that an attack could be carried out on the police convoy transporting the accused Atiq and Ashraf back to UP in the Umesh Pal murder case, to help them escape. In response to this, teams of civil police and special forces were deployed.” It’s worth noting that Asad was killed on the same day that Atiq Ahmed was presented before the CJM court in Prayagraj. Upon hearing of his son’s death, Atiq Ahmed had said, “He died because of me.”
