Karumariamman Temple – Guide
Karumariamman Temple or Kanyakumari Temple is located in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. This magnificent beachside temple is one of the holiest temples in the world. Kumari Amman Temple Considered as one of the 108 Shaktipeeths, this temple is home to Goddess Kanya Kumari, popularly known as the Virgin Goddess.
Karumariamman Temple, more than 3000 years old, has not only religious but also historical significance. The marriage between Lord Shiva and Goddess Kanyakumari did not take place, so Kanyakumari decided to remain a unmarried.
History of this Temple
Goddess Kanya Kumari is Goddess Shri Bhagwati in the form of a teenage girl. The Goddess is also known as Sri Bala Bhadra or Sri Bala. She is popularly known as “Shakti” Durga or Parvati. Kanyakumari temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. Karumariamman Temple was established by the Pandya emperors in the eighth century and was later renovated by the Vijayanagara, Chola and Nayaka kings. Swami Vivekananda visited this temple in December 1892, it was mentioned by Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
Best time to visit Karumariamman Temple
Vaisakhi Festival is the most important festival of Kanyakumari Temple. It is celebrated for a period of 10 days. During this festival, the idol of Goddess Kumari also participates in various processions of the festival. This festival takes place between the months of May and June.
Chitra Purnima Utsav: This festival celebration takes place on the full moon day in May.
Kalabham festival: This festival takes place between the Tamil months of July and August. Sandal paste is applied to the deity on the last Friday of the Tamil month.
Navratri Festival: This festival lasts for 9 days and is usually celebrated in the months of September and October. An image of the goddess is worshiped for the entire nine days in Navaratri and Vijayadashami is the 10th day of the festival.
Karumariamman Temple Timings
Karumariamman Temple opens from 4:30 AM to 12:30 PM in the morning and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 5:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 6:30 PM in the evening.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Vivekananda Rock Memorial was built between 1963 to 1970 with red and blue granite. It is believed that Swami Vivekananda did meditation at this place.

This temple is dedicated to lord Murugan. This temple is located at a distance of about few kms away from the Kumari Amman Temple.
Gandhi memorial
This memorial was built to honor the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The Gandhi memorial has been built in such a way that every year on October 2 at noon, the sun’s rays fall on the exact spot where Gandhiji’s ashes were kept before immersion.
Olakaruvi Falls
This fall is located at a distance of about 80 km away from the temple. This waterfall is located at a distance of 200 meter.
