India discovers rare ‘Matryoshka’ diamond in Gujarat

Surat, the city where the diamond was found, is home to one of the world's largest diamond processing centers.

Move over, Matryoshka diamond, there’s a new contender in town. VD Global, a diamond manufacturer in Surat, Gujarat, has unearthed a rare gem that has been dubbed the “Beating Heart” due to its unique composition: a diamond within a diamond. This 0.329-carat D-colored diamond is a rare find and has been added to the list of rare diamonds, along with the famous Matryoshka diamond that was discovered in Russia in 2019.

Surat, the city where the diamond was found, is home to one of the world’s largest diamond processing centers, where many of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished. The stone was discovered while examining a package of roughs at VD Global’s Surat facility. According to media reports, chairman Vallabh Vaghasiya said, “We found this rare piece of diamond that had another smaller piece trapped inside, but moving freely, which we had never come across earlier.”

Beating Heart diamond

The discovery of the Beating Heart diamond has caused a stir in the diamond industry. VD Global, a De Beers Group Sightholder, informed De Beers of the find, and the stone was taken to the company’s laboratory in Maidenhead, UK, for further testing. The De Beers Institute of Diamonds (DBID) announced the discovery and claimed that it is now part of a small group of rare diamonds.

Samantha Sibley, a technical educator at De Beers Group Ignite, stated that she had “never seen anything like the ‘Beating Heart’ during [her] three decades in the diamond sector.” Using De Beers Group’s expertise, they plan to study the formation and structure of this natural specimen and share their insights with the wider diamond community.
