NCP backs NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland: Sharad Govindrao Pawar, often revered as the ‘Chanakya of Indian Politics’, is known to be one of the smartest in the country. This is the narrative presented by the Lutyens Media; however, the fact of the matter is that leaders like Pawar are just a bunch of clueless politicians, and the recent decision in Nagaland stands in deposition for the same.
Pawar (NCP) backs the NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland
After raising a hue and cry over central investigative agencies along with Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar has now decided to back the NDA government in Nagaland. In the recently concluded assembly elections in Nagaland, the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won 25 seats and the BJP won 12. Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), with seven seats in the 60-member assembly, is the largest out of the NDPP-BJP combine, and it had the numbers to claim the Leader of the Opposition position.
But the NCP, one of the biggest opponents of the BJP in Maharashtra, has thrown its weight behind the NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland, or the NDA government. This was announced by NCP’s North-East incharge, Narendra Verma, on Wednesday. Verma said that party supremo Sharad Pawar has decided to approve of their support for the NDPP-BJP government with Neiphiu Rio as the chief minister as “the local newly elected MLAs and the NCP local unit of the state wanted to be a part of the government in the larger interest of the state.”
Pawar supporting the BJP, not for the first time
In Nagaland, while Sharad Pawar has himself supported the NDA alliance, Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) has dissolved its state unit, as Nagaland state president NSN Lotha has unanimously supported the government.

Sharad Pawar has claimed that support has been declared for the Rio government owing to an “understanding” with Rio prior to the polls. However, this is not the first time that Sharad Pawar has backed any of the BJP governments. Earlier in 2014, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party in the Maharashtra assembly elections, but it fell short of the magic number. Then, Sharad Pawar declared support from outside, following which Devendra Fadnavis took oath as CM.
Pawar and his unfulfilled prime ministerial ambitions
Pawar is a political stalwart, whose eyes have always been on the prime ministerial chair. Due to his bad luck on that front, Pawar has come to be known as the “best Prime Minister India never had”. On three occasions—in 1991, 1999, and 2019—Pawar had aimed to become prime minister. He had been disappointed on all counts.
The first two denials of the prime ministership came from the Congress, while the third was more of the BJP registering a predictable and handsome win in the general election of 2019. Pawar has shown little to no interest in forming a pan-Indian opposition alliance in the country before the 2024 general elections. So, can it be said that Pawar is securing his retirement with his Nagaland move?
