Freebies and appeasement—the favourite allurement candies of opposition parties—have fatal flaws. In their greed for short-term political benefits, parties don’t hesitate to cripple society, create overdependency, and nurture unsustainable expectations.
Now, it seems that the Mamata Banerjee government has been caught in a fix. Devoid of good governance, the denial of certain demands has started causing disenchantment and disillusionment among the electorate. This has forced TMC Supremo to increase the intensity of her rhetoric.
Economic prudence or veiled threat: Either be content with the state’s share or behead me?
Recently, West Bengal has been rocked by the protests of state government employees. The protesting employees have been demanding to increase their dearness allowance and bring it on par with that of the central government employees. However, issuing a cold response, TMC Supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee vehemently snubbed the demand of the protesting employees.
She asserted that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government will not provide Dearness Allowance on par with that of the Central government. During the extended budget session in the state assembly, CM Banerjee opined that the protesting opposition may behead her, but she would not raise the dearness allowance.
Mamata Banerjee said, “I am giving 105 percent DA. How much more do you want? State government employees have different pay scales from central government employees. We don’t have so much capacity as they (the centre) are not giving 100 days’ work money and others. Accept what we are giving (DA issue). If you don’t like me, behead me. But beyond this, I cannot do anything.”

Caught in her own whirlpool
Like most opposition governments, the Mamata Banerjee government has nothing to flaunt in terms of development except its freebies and allurement candies. She seems to have confused herself with BJP stalwart and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But she is not Modi, who has shattered previous styles of politics. On the sheer basis of his work, PM Modi has transcended party, caste, and very slightly religious lines.
The reasons for her and Modi’s electoral success, its sheer scale and magnitude, and their popularity are completely different. Her communal appeal among Muslims clicked during the state assembly elections, but it’s not the same with the PM Modi-led BJP.
A confused replication of PM Modi’s LPG type of request wouldn’t save from her own created fiasco and economic downturn. Whether it is an economically prudent explanation or a cold, hard snub, she can’t hold such protests against her misgovernance as she has nothing to display except appeasement and freebies. Like stated earlier, it has a fatal flaw: the non-continuation of these two will script the downfall of Mamata Banerjee, no matter how delusional she may be to think herself somewhat of the likes of PM Modi.
