Bihari migrants are paying for Tejashwi’s politics with their lives

Tejashwi Yadav, while fighting assembly elections, had promised a ‘New Bihar’. His campaign focused on printing a new image of Lalu Yadav’s party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and distancing himself from the infamous ‘Jungle Raj’. However, seven months into the government, all the effort made in the past 15 years seems to have been reversed.

Further, all doesn’t seem well in the Mahagathbandhan either; the reason here is alleged violence against Bihari migrant labourers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where Tejashwi Yadav went to celebrate the birthday of CM Stalin.

A video of violence against Bihari migrant labourers comes to light

In the past few days, several videos have come to light alleging hate crimes targeting Hindi-speaking migrant Bihari labourers in Tamil Nadu. The attacks have claimed over a dozen lives. As per a report published by Dainik Bhaskar, several migrant labourers working in Tamil Nadu have returned to Jamui district in Bihar, fearing attacks. The ones who have returned have said that as many as 15 people have lost their lives in the “Talibani” style attacks being carried out against Bihari migrants, thus forcing the labourers to flee the state out of fear.

However, the DGPs of both states have denied any such attacks. The Patna ADG said that old videos of disputes and altercations are being circulated with misleading claims. The Tamil Nadu DGP, Sylendra Babu, has also claimed the videos to be false.

Tejashwi’s presence in Tamil Nadu is questioned; Nitish orders a probe

Amidst all this, the Bhartiya Janata Party in Bihar created a ruckus in the state assembly and staged a walkout over the issue. The opposition had demanded a team of members be sent to Tamil Nadu to verify the reports. As soon as the BJP protested, Bihar’s deputy chief minister, Tejashwi Yadav, was ready to jump to conclusions without any probe.

Tejashwi claimed that everything is alright in Tamil Nadu and that the claims made are false. The source of his information might have been his visit to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s birthday bash. Further, Tejashwi paid the visit while the budget session was going on in Bihar. The BJP accused Yadav of being indifferent to “Bihari self-respect”.

In another interesting development, the state’s CM, Nitish Kumar, has given the go-ahead to a team that would be sent to Tamil Nadu. The team would be investigating the alleged violence against Bihari migrant labourers in the southern states, despite his own deputy CM trashing the same.

The deputy CM doesn’t care about migrants, but about politics

The people of Bihar are forced to migrate outside the state due to a lack of adequate opportunities and well-paying jobs. However, the lives of such migrants don’t matter to the political class in Bihar, and the politicians are busy fighting the 2024 elections. While Nitish Kumar has been on a political tour, meeting the opposition leaders to fulfil his prime ministerial dreams.

On the other hand, Tejashwi Yadav seems to be taking a parallel initiative for opposition unity. The RJD leader flew all the way to Chennai to celebrate CM Stalin’s birthday. The other leaders present on the occasion were Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

To mark the occasion, last month Yadav attended the birthday function of Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao and also met Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren. Pulling the opposition together, he probably had to discard the violence being faced by Biharis in the southern state.
