Delhi-Mumbai expressway inauguration: Assembly elections are due in Rajasthan this year and with a history of throwing incumbent governments out of power, Rajasthan becomes extremely important. While the BJP is fighting to come back to power, the Congress is in deep waters trying to battle anti-incumbency. However, with Ashok Gehlot at the helm of affairs that seems difficult. And with the inauguration of the Dausa belt of Delhi-Mumbai expressway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the tone for Rajasthan elections, that this time the elections would be fought on development. However, it has a caste angle to it too.
Delhi-Mumbai expressway inaugurated by PM Modi
The longest highway of India, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, has been in the making and aims to reduce the travel between two cities by half. The Prime Minister, on February 12, 2023, dedicated the 246 km long Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot section of the expressway to the nation.
The Delhi-Mumbai expressway is aimed at increasing connectivity and reducing travel time between the national capital and financial capital of the nation. This will further lead to an increased demand for commercial and industrial properties in the region.
With the inauguration Dausa belt of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, PM Modi has made it clear that the BJP would contest the upcoming elections on the agenda of development.
Hence, the Prime Minister emphasised on infrastructural development and said, “When such modern roads, railway stations, railway tracks, Metro and airports are constructed, the country’s development gets momentum.” He also remarked that in the past 9 years, the union government has invested more than Rs 50,000 crores for infrastructure development.

PM Modi sets the tone for Rajasthan elections
After the inauguration of Delhi-Mumbai expressway, the PM addressed a rally organised in Rajasthan’s Dausa district, a Gujjar-Meena belt. It was the Gujjar votes that tilted considerably towards the Congress party, owing to the leg work of Deputy CM Sachin Pilot. This time, the BJP is eyeing to woo both Meena and Gujjar votes, as Gujjars contribute around 10 percent of the population and significantly impact over 50 assembly seats.
The Gujjar community has been distancing itself from the Congress due to Pilot being at loggerheads with CM Ashok Gehlot, and not offering the CM chair to him. The BJP is planning an outreach to the community. For the same, PM Modi visited Malaseri in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara on the 1111th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Dev Narayan, a folk deity revered by the Gujjar community.
Tribals make up over 14% of the state population amongst which Meena being a majority. While they have traditionally voted for the grand old party, the BJP this time is trying to make inroads with heavyweights like Kirodi Lal Meena.
