While nepotism is often criticized and justifiably so, there are instances where family dynasties have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. One notable example is Mithoon Sharma, a highly regarded music director, lyricist-composer, and singer, who showcases how talented individuals within a family can pass on their skills and expertise to future generations.
Mithoon Sharma, a musical gem of India, is a name that might not be familiar to everyone but his music speaks volumes. This article aims to provide information and shed light on the achievements of this remarkable artist.
The prodigy
Mithoon Sharma hails from a renowned music family, with grandfather Pandit Ramprasad Sharma training famous musicians. His father Naresh Sharma was also a well-known musician, who along with his brother Pyarelal Sharma became one of the pillars of the famous music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Remarkably, Mithoon Sharma was only 20 years old when he stepped into the music industry and composed the famous songs “Woh Lamhe” and “Ab To Aadat” from the films “Zeher” and “Kalyug“.
In 2006, he officially debuted as a composer with the films “Anwar” and “Bas Ek Pal”, where he gave music to songs like “Tere Bin”, “Tose Naina Lage” and “Aankhen Teri”. These songs are still fresh today and show the talent and potential that Mithoon Sharma had even at the young age of 21.

The underestimated musical gem
Despite giving soulful melodies, Mithun had to struggle hard with meager opportunities coming his back, part of which were with Emraan Hashmi.
In 2011, Mithoon Sharma composed two songs for “Murder 2” – “Aye Khuda” and “Phir Mohabbat”. This greatly impressed Mohit Suri, who offered him to compose music for “Aashiqui 2”. Mithun’s composition of the song “Tum Hi Ho” became an overnight sensation and won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Music Director.
Moving forward, Mithoon Sharma worked on numerous projects, and his music became a hallmark of success, regardless of the commercial performance of the film. For example his songs in “Shivaay” and “Half Girlfriend” did phenomenally well despite their feeble run at the box office.
Later, 2019 brought him back into prominence. After ignoring for a while, he was finally recognized for his talent with the film “Kabir Singh”. His composition, “Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage Hain Hum”, was as popular as “Bekhayali” and “Pehla Pehla Pyaar”.
His contribution to the film was honored at the 2020 Filmfare Awards, where “Kabir Singh” shared the award for Best Music with “Gully Boy”.
All throughout his career, he never compromised on his musical abilities for want of commercial success. He still continues to deliver divine music to the audience. With the announcement of his upcoming project, “Gadar 2”, it is safe to say that Mithoon Sharma is a name to look out for in the future.
