Kalna Shiv Mandir – Guide

Ambika Kalna 108 Shiv Mandir, also known as Nava Kailash Temple, is one of the holiest places in Purba Burdwan district of West Bengal. The place has a total of 108 Shiva temples encircling a courtyard.

History of this Temple

It is said that Rani Bishnukumari, the widowed wife of King Tilakchand, had a divine dream of building a temple of Lord Shiva in the area. Kalna Shiv Mandir was then built by Maharaja Tej Chandra Bahadur to celebrate the transfer of power of the royal estate of Bishnupur in 1809 AD.

108 is a spiritual number in Hindu mythology that represents the beads of the rosary. The outer arch has alternate Shiva shrines with black and white Shiva lingas respectively. The inner arc temples have all white Shiva Lingas. The temple is also known as Navratna. It is said that the white Shiva linga represents the calm and peaceful form of Shiva and the black Shiva linga is Rudra or the angry form of Lord Shiva.
