India’s lithium expedition: Liberating India from dependence

Lithium reserves discovered in Jammu and Kashmir: Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Yes, it is a cliché thing to say but it aptly describes India’s tireless and to an extent successful expedition for the strategic mineral, Lithium.

Despite the fact that unlike many resource-blessed nations like those in Gulf or Lithium triangles, India managed to spur growth in these segments purely through its tenacity for the welfare of its people and environment. Now, it seems that India has started to hit the jackpot at the domestic front and getting the deposits of strategic minerals.

Lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir

The government of India recently announced the discovery of 5.9 million tons of lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first occasion that such reserves have been discovered in the country. This discovery will take India at the 2nd rank in the world in terms of Lithium reserve only behind Chile ( (9,300,000 MT). Australia (3,800,000 MT), Argentina (2,700,000MT) and China (2,000,000 MT) will make up for third, fourth and fifth rank in the world.

Announcing the discovery, the Ministry of Mines said, “Geological Survey of India (GSI) for the first time established Lithium inferred resources (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes in the Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir”.

The ministry further stated that 51 mineral blocks, which include Lithium and Gold, were transferred to the respective state governments. The preparation of the mineral blocks was based on the work conducted by the Geological Survey of India, covering the field seasons from 2018-19 to the present day.

The Past antecedents

In August 2019, the Modi government formed a joint venture company namely Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) to ease the process of extraction and resupplying of strategic minerals, including Lithium, back to India.

Afterwards, along with assistance to host nations, India has been actively looking for mines throughout the world to fulfil its need of strategic minerals including the much touted soul of EV sector – Lithium.

Further, several African nations have been courting India to carry out exploration and extraction of these strategic minerals in their countries. Trapped in Chinese loan snare, they have understood the reliability and their symbiotic progress with India.

Apart from Africa, the identification of two lithium and one copper mines in Argentina by India is a major win for the nation in the International expedition for Lithium and other strategic minerals.

Now, as we move from the fossil fuel-dominated era of the past towards a more sustainable future powered by green energy, India stands at the forefront of this revolution, breaking free from its dependence on foreign sources of oil and confidently charting a course towards self-sufficiency.
