HD Kumaraswamy Brahmins remark: It was in 1988, when several small parties along with Janata Party merged to form Janata Dal. From there emerged a leader, Deve Gowda, who not only formed a coalition government with himself as the Prime Minister but also founded Janata Dal (Secular) with the faction of JD that opposed alliance with Bhartiya Janata Dal led- NDA. The JD(S) went on to become a political force in its home state of Karnataka and some parts of Kerala. However, today’s reality stands different and the behaviour of HD Kumaraswamy stands in deposition for the same.
HD Kumaraswamy takes jibe on Brahmins targeting Prahlad Joshi
In a reaction to a statement made by Union Minister Prahlad Joshi that the JD(S) prioritises the interest of family over all in regard to political decisions.
HD Kumaraswamy responded by saying that Joshi belonged to a sect of Brahmins which desecrated the Sringeri Shankaracharya Peeth and assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.
Later as the uproar against HD Kumaraswamy intensified, he sought to blame the entire controversy upon misinterpretion of his words. He said that he had nothing against the Brahmin community and had only sought to highlight that Joshi “has the DNA of Peshwas.” He said, “Historical records show the Peshwas community was involved in destroying Vidyaranya’s Chandramouleshwara temple in Sringeri andconspiring to kill Chhatrapati Shivaji.”
HD Kumaraswamy Brahmins remarks stokes controversy
The remarks by HD Kumaraswamy, former Karnataka Chief Minister has stirred controversy around Karanataka and people from Brahmin community have launched protest against Kumaraswamy. From Koppal to Gangavathi, the Brahmin community have took out rallies registering protest over his statement and demanded an apology from HD Kumaraswamy warning that Brahmins would maintain distance from JD(S).

Later, Kumaraswamy clarified that his remarks was against Joshi and RSS’ attempt to lodge him, a Brahmin, as the CM of the state from backdoor. “While our family has immense respect for the Brahmin community, which is highly cultured, especially in the old Mysuru region, I was only pointing out that BJP was plotting to install a person with the DNA of Peshwas as chiefminister,” Kumaraswamy said after meeting with party workers in Yeshwantpur.
Kumaraswamy hits his own leg with Brahmin CM card
Karnataka is a state where the numbers lie with Lingayats, Vokkaligas and OBCs, as they are dominant and Brahmins make up just two per cent of the total population. Hence, choice of a Brahmin CM in Karnataka is a self-goal.
Till date, the southern state has had just two Brahmin CMs- Ramakrishna Hegde (1983-1988) of the Janata Party and R Gundu Rao (1980-1983) of the Congress. However, both the time, they were backed by the dominant groups, like in Hedge enjoyed full backing of BJP as well as the Lingayats.
The statement is nothing but presentation of Kumaraswamy’s desperation as the BJP, already enjoying the support of Lingayats is comfortably attracting the Vokkaligas of the state, earlier deemed to be a loyal votebank of the JD(S).
