Chhattisgarh Coal levy scam : The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been on a mission mode, cracking down on everything that is wrong with the current system. The recent actions of the agency can be seen in regard with the corruption-free aim of the Narendra Modi government. Following the same agenda of making new-India corruption free, the Enforcement Directorate on Monday raided several premises in Chhattisgarh in connection with the coal mining case aka Coal levy scam, thus, unearthing some gory details.
ED raids several places in Chhattisgarh
The central agency began an operation early Monday morning, searching over 14 spots in the state of Chhattisgarh. Amongst 14 searched premises, around 8 were private properties. Some of the premises being searched are linked to legislators and office-bearers of the Congress party, including state party treasurer.
The agency has reportedly said that the ones being searched are suspected to be beneficiaries of the proceeds of the coal levy scam that allegedly perpetrated during the tenure of the current government, under the aegis of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, said some reports. The agency has alleged that proceeds were diverted to the party funds that were used in the Khairagarh by-polls.
Reports suggest that ED has documentary evidence that treasurer Ram Gopal Agarwal received Rs 52 crores. ED is also investigating tenders of Aari Dongri mines, high-value iron ore and a company linked to him. Several arrests have been made in the Coal levy scam case including a state administrative officer, Chhattisgarh cadre IAS officer and coal businessman.

The ED alleged that “a massive scam in which an illegal levy of Rs 25 was extorted for every tonne of coal transported in Chhattisgarh or from Coal consumption companies, by a cartel involving senior bureaucrats, businessmen, politicians and middlemen.”
This is not the first raid by the agency. Earlier, in October 2022, the agency had recovered Rs 4 crore cash along with other valuables after conducting raids on 40 locations linked to bureaucrats, politicians and businessmen of the state. During this, deputy secretary to the CM, Saumya Chaurasia was also arrested. In 2021, the agency had claimed that the total collection through the scam may touch as high as Rs 500 crore.

Congress cries vendetta
The Congress party and its leaders, instead of coming together with the central government to fight corruption, are busy keeping alive their legacy, created by Bofors, Jeep scam, 2G, 3G and many other scams like CWG scams. Reacting to the raids, Congress CM Bhupesh Baghel called the raids being conducted as part of the bigger investigation as a tool to divert attention. The CM said, “The BJP is frustrated with the success of ‘Bharat Jodo yatra’ and the truth about Adani being exposed. This raid is an attempt to divert attention.”

Well, it must be well understood on the part of Congress that old habits die hard. And thus it must asked to the Congress party that there didn’t happen any Bharat Jodo Yatra or any Hindenburg report, as the investigation has been going on for the past two years.
