Vijayawada Kanaka Durga Temple – Overview

Kanaka Durga Temple is located in the city of Vijayawada which is a city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. This temple is situated on the banks of Krishna River on the hills of Indrakeeladri mountain. In this temple, idol of Durga Mata is situated. Kanaka Durga, the goddess of power and wealth, is considered the presiding deity of Vijayawada. This temple is also known as Sri Durga Malleswara Swami Temple.

History and Architecture of the Temple

In the Kanaka Durga temple, Mata Durga is considered to be Swayambhu or the self-manifested goddess, hence this temple of Maa Durga is considered very powerful. The present form of the temple was built by Pushapati Mahadev Varma in the twelfth century. It was he who built the modern Vijayawada city.

The idol of Maa Durga in the Kanaka Durga Temple is beautifully decorated with glittering jewelery and bright flowers. The temple depicts the symbol of Mother Durga in her eight-armed form.

Holding a mighty weapon in each hand, she is shown standing over the demon king Mahishasura and hitting him with her trident. There is a temple of Malleswara Swami on the Indrakeeladri mountain near the Kanakadurga temple. While climbing the stairs on the hill, small figures of various gods and goddesses have been made on the walls. Among them the figures of Kanaka Durga, Malleswara Swami and the river Krishna are major.

Undavalli Caves

Undavalli Caves are a group of stone temples situated in the greenery. The history of these caves is more than 1300 years old. A short walk from the Undavalli Caves will take you to a spot that gives an excellent view of the Krishna River. These caves are a wonderful place to visit in Vijayawada for historians and architecture.

Prakasam Barrage

Prakasam Barrage is one of the most famous places located in Vijayawada. This is a very beautiful bridge. Which connects Krishna and Guntur district. It was constructed in the year 1957 and is named after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Tanguturi Prakasam.

Bhavani Island

Bhavani Island is one of the largest river islands in India. It is one of the top tourist places to visit in Vijayawada. The island is more famous for its serene environment and lush green gardens.

Kondapalli Fort

Kondapalli Fort is also known as Kondapalli Kota. It reflects the medieval glory of Vijayawada. This fort situated in the hilly area and is very quiet place. It is more than 700 years old.

Rajiv Gandhi Park

Rajiv Gandhi Park is most attractive tourist place in Vijayawada. This is the park which situated on the banks of the river. Some of the park’s major attractions include a musical fountain and structures of prehistoric animals and dinosaurs.

How to reach Vijayawada Kanaka Durga Temple

By Air- Nearest airport to Kanaka Durga temple is Vijayawada International Airport. The distance of the temple from the airport is about 24 kms. You can easily reach temple by taxi or bus from Vijayawada International Airport.

By Train- The nearest railway station to this temple is Vijayawada railway station. The distance of the temple from the railway station is about 2 kms. From here you can easily reach temple by   auto taxi.

By Road- you can easily reach the temple through state transport buses, private buses and taxis from any city in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
