History of this Temple

After the churning of the ocean, the deities had conquered the auras. The deities got the urn of nectar. They decided to drink nectar and gathered at one place.

As decided, they shared the pot of nectar but forgot to invoke Lord Ganesha. As was a tradition, Lord Ganesha was angry. So, he stole the pot and hide it in Thirukdaiyur. Before that, Lord Ganesha made a Shivling and poured some nectar. That’s why Lord Shiva is known as Amritkadeshwar. The so-called God who leads to immortality.

Since that time Thirukadaiyur Temple has become a place of pilgrimage. Hence, people started worshiping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. During the Chola rule this temple was renovated. Rajaraja Chola 1 expanded the temple.
