The most underrated achievements of Modi government

Achievements of Modi government list

Sipping a cup of morning tea with barely a news of terrorism in the newspaper provides a profound sense of peace and security. This is the case with recent developments in Indian context. But “Rome was not built in a day”. It took the Modi Government a lot of effort and reforms that are now paying off. So, it becomes necessary to analyse those contributions properly. In this article we are going to talk about the most underrated Achievements of Modi government.

Peaceful address

On Monday, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur addressed the media about ‘Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism’ as the policy focus of Government of India. He said that “Terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir have reduced by 168 per cent under the Modi government and the conviction rate in terror financing cases is over 94 per cent”. He further added that Left Wing Extremism incidents have reduced by more than double to over 265 per cent from 2015 to June 2022 this year.

Thakur also eased the insecurity regarding AFSPA by saying “The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been completely withdrawn from Tripura and Meghalaya and from 60 percent of Assam.”

This statement becomes crucial at a time when reports are proving it right. On December 19, security officials arrested an LeT operative with arms, ammunitions and explosives. According to officials, this helped in aversion of major attacks on convoys and as well as target killings. Additionally, 3 LeT terrorist were shot dead today in Shopian. This is one of the great Achievements of Modi government in recent times.

Recent Home Ministry data shows that cross-border infiltrations have gone down significantly in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2017, Jammu and Kashmir faced 139 infiltrations out of 419 attempts. That number was reduced to 34 infiltrations in 2021. There is a reduction in terrorist incidents too. The data clearly shows that the surgical strike of 2016 and the air strike of 2019 acted as a deterrence for Pakistan sponsored infiltration and terrorism.

On analysing the MHA report, it becomes evident that after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, infiltrations have fallen steeply to 51 from previous 139 in 2020, which is now further reduced to 34 cases in 2021.

In the North East, the ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ too got the proper emphasis they deserved. For the region’s peace and prosperity, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has held dialogue with all the states of the North East on a regular basis. Consequently, most extremist group dropped their arms, showing faith in Indian constitution. The MHA report proclaims that about 7000 militants have surrendered in the last few years.

Due to improvements in the situation, Disturbed Area Notification under AFSPA has been completely removed from the states of Tripura and Meghalaya in 2015 and 2018 respectively.

Several agreements like Bodo Accord of January 2020 and Karbi-Anglong Agreement 2021 were made as a part of resolved regional issues. A milestone agreement was made between government of Tripura and NLFT(SD) in 2019 to bring militants into mainstream society. Following that, in 2020, 37,000 internally displaced persons were resettled in Tripura, ending the Bru-Reang crisis.

According to above discussed report, out of 35 districts of Assam, AFSPA has been removed from 23 districts completely and partially from 1 district. Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur are the final states that are still under AFSPA. However, the central government, from time to time, has shown commitment to ease the tensions in whole of North East and remove AFSPA on priority basis.

Achievements of Modi government and Effect on the Nation

The determination to solve an issue is half the journey. The Government of India, from day one, looked determined about Jammu and Kashmir and North East. PM Modi knew that keeping borders safe is the solution to most of the problems of these regions. In a proper planned way, the government has taken steps to, first secure the border and then reduce insurgency. People were taken into confidence and were made to join the mainstream development of India. This is not a small achievement as the problems were decades old.

Considering North East security reformation, the government seems mostly silent. It looks like they don’t want to politicise the issue as it is in nascent stage and the responsibility is big.
